Manufacturing, for me, has always provided plenty of opportunity for creativity and challenge. I've been a "job shop" machinist since 1995 and that experience has been full of enjoyment, education and more than a few 20 hour shifts. I've made oil field drill heads and well components, 2 inch keyways in 10" x 18 foot long pump shafts for the city of New Orleans, and a 5/8" bore, 5/8" stroke 4 cylinder 4 cycle gasoline engine, designed by Dale Detrich.In 1993, my first High School shop class assignment was to grind a tool bit for a lathe on a bench grinder (if the student couldn't grind a tool bit, they were dropped from the course). Once I ground the cutter and turned my first part, I was hooked. After my first use of a surface grinder, I realized that I didn't have to depend on a catalog to source a cutter, and my machining strategies were nearly unlimited. I was trained for a decade at PMB Industries Inc. I had the luxury of working with CNC lathe, CNC mill, CNC laser cutter, brake press, welding dept, shear, surface grinder, and general product production. My favorite job at PMB was designing and building a progressive punch die for a job on our brake press, but I dare call myself a die-maker. That job paid off at Rimtec corporation when custom teflon sheet forms were required for a job. I designed and fabricated male and female punch sets out of plain steel within an hour to produce what would otherwise require laser or waterjet cutting or expensive tooling to produce.In my latest endeavour, I've signed on as Shop Manager at KPI Machining, Inc. in Sheridan, IL. We specialize in CNC milling and turning. We have the capacity to produce our own unique tooling and methods to fabricate complicated components quickly and accurately. Currently, we are serving companies across the country. We produce items from simple turned parts, to advanced multiaxis milling in exotic materials.
