Life Member
In 2018, I was elected to a Clare Hall Visiting Fellowship to advance my research and scholarship and mentor graduate students in the University of Cambridge. Fellows are chosen from across the disciplines to be part of Clare Hall, Cambridge, a unique college devoted to research and scholarship and a culturally rich and intellectually exciting academic community. I am now a Life Member of the college (https://www.clarehall.cam.ac.uk/news/scienceandnature21/), which facilitates my research collaborations across the University. I have had visiting posts in the University's MRC Epidemiology Unit, MRC Biostatistics Unit, and Department of Medicine.I develop and apply genomic and computational methods to investigate the genetic architecture of complex traits, including disease risk and drug response. I am interested in what can be learned from DNA sequence and multi-omics data about disease mechanism, therapeutic intervention, molecular evolution, and genome function. I am actively involved in an international effort (GTEx Consortium) to systematically characterize the effect of genetic variation on gene regulation in a comprehensive set of tissues and create a genomic resource to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying disease-associated regions of the genome. I also work on integrating large-scale DNA biobank data and electronic health records to identify genes involved in health and disease. In recent highly interdisciplinary work, I am developing computational approaches to studying the structure, dynamics, and stability of biological molecules within Density Functional Theory (DFT), molecular dynamics, and coarse-grained modelling and using experimental data (e.g., from X-ray crystallography or NMR spectroscopy).
Principal Investigator, Associate Professor (With Tenure)
I am broadly interested in genomics, computational biology, and genomic medicine. I am a tenured faculty member in the Division of Genetic Medicine, Department of Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) (since 2023). I have an affiliation with the Vanderbilt Genetics Institute (VUMC), Center for Precision Medicine (Vanderbilt University), Vanderbilt Memory & Alzheimer's Center, and the Data Science Institute (Vanderbilt University). I also have an affiliation with the newly launched Potocsnak Center for Undiagnosed and Rare Disorders, VUMC.The Gamazon lab is an interdisciplinary hybrid environment with expertise in computational genomics and molecular biology. The lab has been the research training ground for a Fulbright Scholar, a Barry Goldwater Scholar, a NARSAD Young Investigator Grant recipient, and a Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual Predoctoral Fellow. Our work was a recipient of the inaugural Genomic Innovator Award (2019) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).Research Interests: Functional Genomics, Statistical Genetics, Computational Biology, Pharmacogenomics, Evolutionary Biology, Cancer Genomics, Hematopoiesis, Stem Cells, Neuropsychiatric Genomics, Structural Biology, Deep Learning* Co-chair, GWAS Working Group of the GTEx Consortium* Member, Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) Genetic Exploration by Next-generation Sequencing in Ethnic Samples (T2D-GENES) Consortium (https://www.nature.com/articles/nature18642)* Member, International Warfarin Pharmacogenetics Consortium – Genome Wide Association Studies (IWPC-GWAS) (https://www.pharmgkb.org/page/iwpc-gwas)Journal Editorship:* Editorial Board, Genome Medicine (2024 – Present)* Editorial Board, PLOS Computational Biology (2024 – Present)* Editorial Board, Statistical Editor, Circulation Research (2019 – 2021)For a more complete list of publications (and because Linkedin does not facilitate correct listing of authors), see:https://my.vanderbilt.edu/ericgamazon/publications/
