Dr. Eric J. Sampson served for over 25 years as the Director of the Division of Laboratory Sciences at the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Environmental Health. As DLS Director, Dr. Sampson led a scientific staff of approximately 400 people. Under his direction, his team was involved in a number of precedent-setting epidemiologic studies and investigations in which laboratory data provided key information for resolving epidemics and/or formulating public health policy. Areas of applied research within DLS, under Dr. Sampson’s leadership, focused on laboratory measurements of chemicals in samples from people using a technique known as biomonitoring. Under his direction, he started major laboratories on tobacco and smoking addition, newborn screening, and responding to chemical/radiologic terrorism. Over the course of his career, Dr. Sampson has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Young Investigator Award from the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service; the National Center for Environmental Health Director’s Special Recognition Award and the Association of Public Health Laboratories President’s Award for service to the public health laboratory system. In addition, he has received the Diabetes Technology Society Leadership Award, and the William C. Watson, Jr. Medal of Excellence Award by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Sampson has testified before Congressional committees and has lectured worldwide as an eminent authority in the field of biomonitoring.In 2010, the Director, CDC, asked Dr. Sampson to serve as a Senior Advisor on science issues between the Food and Drug Administration and CDC. His work involved working on a number of diverse areas including: food safety, nutrition, tobacco, and counterfeit drugs. From 2011 to 2012, he served as Acting Director of Science, Office of Regulatory Affairs, FDA.
