My role as a research assistant builds upon my previous experience working at Stanford University. Specifically, I helped create the first genetic animal model for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Most importantly, I aided in a Nature Medicine publication illustrating the novel role of leukotrienes (LTB4) in the pathogenesis of lymphedema. Additionally, this study also suggests for the first time a treatment for lymphedema, which was recently patented and awaiting a phase II clinical trial. As a research assistant, I am aiming for my first authorship publication by introducing new technologies, specifically microRNA sequencing to study the plasticity of macrophages in PAH.

As I began taking more graduate school courses at Stanford University, I also began working under Dr. Vinicio de Jesus Perez in his pulmonary hypertension laboratory exploring the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Research suggests that modulation of β-catenin may be important to control the overgrowth of smooth muscle cells within pulmonary vasculature of idiopathic pulmonary hypertension. My project focused upon creating a high-throughput screen to investigate the role of small-molecule inhibitors as it relates to modulating levels of β-catenin. Currently, I am in the process of preparing my data for publication to show the efficacy of certain small-molecules on smooth muscle cells from pulmonary hypertension patients.

Beginning in 2012, I work as both an assistant manager and server at the fine dining fondue restaurant, La Fondue. As both manager and server, my experiences includes interacting with customers to ensure quality customer service and a pleasant dining experience but also interacting with kitchen staff and other servers to ensure an efficient, cost-effective restaurant work environment. As a manager, I greet and seat patrons while also answering phone-calls, returning emails, and making dining reservations. In addition, I ensure the performance of servers on duty while also training new servers. As a server, I greet patrons, take orders, prepares cheese fondues, and ensure a pleasant and happy dining experience. As both a manager/server, I learn valuable time-management and customer service skills that can be applied in any walk of life not to mention valuable teamwork and leadership skills needed to run a restaurant.

During the summer of 2013, I became one of the first biology tutors at Foothill College used to support biology students taking core biology cirriculum courses such as Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Nutrition, and other basic biology courses. These hours were spent guiding students through assigned homework problems, difficult lecture content, and highlighting study skills needed to succeed.

After graduate school, I returned to the Bay Area where I began teaching Anatomy and Physiology as an adjunct biology professor at Foothill Community College. Currently, I teach undergraduate students looking to enter the medical field for various reasons. In addition to the lecture series, I also conduct a laboratory series attached to each quarter of instruction facilitating laboratory exercises using models and tissue dissection to bring together lecture concepts with hands-on training. As a young teacher, this experience was an important link that began influencing the type of physician I want to become. A physician with teaching experience brings a unique educating/mentoring perspective when interacting with future patients.

This job currently highlights my continued motivation to teach the sciences at a high level. My classes consisted of incoming high school freshman and sophmores; teaching them basic biological concept. Through lectures and laboratories, I aimed to stimulate critical thinking and lay the academic foundation needed for further scientific thought.

My externship during graduate school occurred in the Cardiology Division within the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine at Anschutz Medical Campus. During this externship, I worked as a graduate research assistant for Dr. Roger Bannister studying skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue; investigating small monomeric G-proteins in ALS and Sick Sinus Syndrome. The research focused on the increased expression of these proteins in aged mice and how this correlates with decreased muscular excitability. Using biochemical techniques such as Western Blots along with histological staining, I contributed to this research, which resulted in numerous publications and new grants for the laboratory.

During my college athletic career, I participated weekly in strength and conditioning training guided by coaches who I admired for their knowledge of achieving maximal physical human performance. Because it directly related to my studies of anatomy and physiology, I became CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) certified to further research and study the effects of human performance training. With this credential, I took a job as a sports performance coach at Athletic Republic training high school athletes to excel in their relative sports. Over the course of a few months, I took pride in helping athletes develop their skills while attempting to reach their dreams.

I was charged with coordinating laboratory classes with their lecture. In this way, I supplemented their knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology lecture with laboratory animal dissection and anatomy. This knowledge was tested by integrating laboratory quizzes and practicals with the new knowledge taught in their laboratory sections associated with Anatomy and Physiology Lecture.
