About Eric Simpson

Fund-raising professional, editor, and freelance arts critic. Over the last decade, I have thrived in administrative, fundraising, and editorial responsibilities with a range of organizations. Most recently, I served for two years as Director of Development at Opera Lafayette, where I helped facilitate important artistic collaborations and laid the groundwork for an anniversary campaign that will see the company through its first ever transition of artistic leadership. Previously, I was Chief Development Officer at the Paideia Institute for Humanistic Study, where I built a fundraising infrastructure for a young nonprofit that had not previously had experienced development staff.Prior to joining Paideia, I was an editor at a 501(c)(3) cultural review in New York, where I was involved in every aspect of publication and management, including responsibility for most fundraising activity. I freelanced as a music critic for the Classical Review, writing approximately 70-80 online reviews per year, on overnight deadlines, of performances at major New York cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic. I have also contributed book reviews and essays to The Wall Street Journal and The Hopkins Review.I began playing the violin at age four, and won numerous concerto competitions and awards before giving up my performing career due to a nerve injury. At Yale, I majored in classics, with a special focus on the histories of ancient Greece and the late Roman Republic, and was permitted by audition to take violin lessons with faculty at the Yale School of Music. I acted in a number of classical plays in high school and college, and upon graduation from Yale I completed a one-year intensive acting conservatory program at the HB Studio in New York, before beginning shifting my career from performance towards administration.Though no longer on the concert circuit, I consider myself an accomplished amateur musician--in 2015 I competed and was selected as a finalist for an amateur competition hosted by WQXR.
