Thiermann founded the Santa Cruz-based media agency and production company Impact Creative. During his 30-year career, Thiermann has filmed hundreds of media projects in over 40 countries for industry and non-profits. A recipient of an independent filmmaker grant from The American Film Institute, he completed a series on artists in maximum-security prisons for PBS, "Art and the Prison Crisis," and shortly after, produced and directed the documentary "The Last Epidemic: Medical Consequences of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear War," recognized by Life and Newsweek magazines as the most influential nuclear documentary of its time. He then directed "In the Nuclear Shadow: What Can the Children Tell Us?" nominated for an Academy Award in 1983. In 1986, he lensed "Women for America," which received the Academy Award for best short documentary. His work covers a wide range of socially relevant subjects from domestic violence, hospice, and children's advocacy to environmental stewardship with the National Park Service, The Yosemite Conservancy, and The Sierra Club.He lives in Santa Cruz, California where he worked with Team Impact on the We Are Santa Cruz community building project, but he could just as easily have been found shooting video in the Amazon, the outback of Austrialia, the North Pole, the Ganges River, 3D of Dr. Dre at the Coachella Music Festival, or Thich Nhat Hanh for "The Heart of a Bell". In 2017 he returned from Russia after meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev, and was immediately off to the poorest community in Haiti for a VR project, and then on to Ghana for a project on teenage girls at risk.In 2021 he transferred ownership of Impact Creative to its creative employees and co-founded Connect Universe, an educational video game company. He is currently working on a powerful climate abatement initiative, Earth Island Odyssey, an immersive, gamified environment containing the most comprehensive collection of solutions to the climate crisis on the planet incorporated in a riveting video game.
