During his 20+ years in the Cincinnati Public Schools, Eric was a teacher, District Coordinator, Principal, Turnaround Principal Coach, and the Chief Innovation Officer. As Chief Innovation Officer, reporting directly to the Superintendent, Eric led the redesign of the district’s teacher evaluation system, facilitated the development of new schools, launched a nationally regarded support model for at-risk males, and created a Principal’s Academy to establish a pipeline for transformational leaders. In 2012, Eric became the Chief Support Officer for the University of Virginia’s Partnership for Leaders in Education (PLE) Program. He was tasked with reimagining the pro- gram’s approach to support districts nationally. The Rand Corp identified the PLE (a partnership between the Darden Business School and the Curry School of Education) as the most effective school improvement model in the country.In 2017, Dr. Thomas was selected as Georgia’s first Chief Turnaround Officer. Eric reported directly to the State Board of Education. Along with improving outcomes for targeted schools and districts, Eric’s team used a design thinking approach to pilot innovations that were then diffused to impact improvement efforts for Georgia's 1.8 million students. Today, as Associate Superintendent in Minneapolis Public Schools, Dr. Thomas engages others to lay the foundation to reduce some of the nation's largest achievement gaps.
