I am a Professor at Monash University, located near Melbourne, Australia. I hold an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship, “Gravitational-wave astronomy: detection and beyond.” I am a Chief Investigator for OzGrav: the ARC Centre for Gravitational-wave Discovery. My research interests include astrophysics, cosmology, gravitational waves, and neutrinos. Since 2008, I have been a member of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) Scientific Collaboration.From 2015-2016, I was the Unit Coordinator for first-year Physics at Monash. During this time, I pioneered the transition of the class to a “studio physics” mode, which emphasises active learning and peer observation. In mid-2016, I stepped down from this role as required by my Future Fellowship. Since 2017, I have been teaching General Relativity to fourth-year students.I engage in a wide range of outreach activities. Since arriving in Australia in 2015, I have written several articles for The Conversation, appeared on ABC Radio National’s Science Show (hosted by Robyn Williams), and been featured on Catalyst with Dr Graham Phillips on ABC TV. Following the gravitational-wave detection announcement in February of 2016, I was featured in a number of media outlets including The Sydney Morning Herald (syndicated across Fairfax), The Conversation, Australasian Science Magazine, The Australian, The Red Symons Breakfast Show, 3AW Radio, ABC News, and The Project. I spoke on behalf of the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy during a televised press event in Canberra.Before coming to Monash, I held postdoctoral positions at Caltech and the University of Minnesota. I carried out my PhD in neutrino astrophysics at the University of Washington, where I worked on the Super-Kamiokande experiment.
