Director Of Public Safety
CurrentResponsible for overseeing and managing the Police Department, Emergency Medical Service, and Civil Defense functions for the City and Fire District. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): communications, community/public relations, planning/organizing, and administrationManages and supervises department to achieve goals within available resources; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed. Provides professional advice to the Mayor, City Administrator, the City Council and other City department heads. Makes presentations to other boards, commissions, civic groups and the general public as required. Responsible for reviewing union agreements and interpreting administration of provisions. Assists in contract negotiations.Responsible for communicating with citizens regarding police personnel complaints and advising victims, witnesses and offenders on legal procedures. Reviews complaints, determining necessity of investigation and investigating subordinate staff performance complaints.Serves as department liaison with City officials, elected officials and community groups, representing the department at meetings and ceremonies. Responsible for investigating alleged police misconduct situations, including “use of force” reports. Writes and delivers speeches and conducting news conferences with the press.Prepares annual budget based upon agreed plans and policies. Assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control. Prepares and submits to the City Administrator such reports as may be required by that body or as it may deem advisable to submit. Recommends for adoption by the City Administrator such measures as may deem necessary or expedient.
