Eric Hoppe is an internationally recognized leader in the ultralow background physics community particularly with regard to ultra-radiopure materials and ultra-sensitive assays. He is a fellow of the American Chemical Society. Probably most widely known for developing the process and producing what is generally accepted as the world's most radiopure copper. Further, he and his team have developed extremely sensitive assay techniques for U, Th, and K in a variety of materials using ICPMS. These elements are widely accepted as the most relevant species for the low-background physics community. Eric and his team are making a significant impact on this continually emerging field in low background physics. His team is recognized for their technical expertise as well as focused development of analytical protocols and methods• Developed and leads PNNL’s clean materials capability• Led development of the clean chemistry methods that enable the clean materials capability• Led development of best-in-the-world radiopure copper• Led development of best-in-the-world assay of radioisotopes in copper, plastics, and other materials• Currently developing other new radiopure materials and alloysHe previously performed and managed a group conducting organic analytical chemistry using a wide assortment of instrumentation, performing method development for a variety of priority pollutants, hazardous vapors, and other analytes.With his wife they operate Heron Bluff Vineyard and Winery west of Benton City Washington in the Yakima Valley AVA and just outside of the Red Mountain AVA. They sell several different varietals on a 52 acre estate and will be opening a tasting room soon.
