About Eric Wagner, Gisp
I'll admit, this description is a bit dated (2018), but it still describes the essence of what I strive for in my career; understand, teach, and change the world with GIS:I always start a new semester of my Geographic Information Systems (GIS) class with a map I colored in the third grade. It is not very pretty at all, in fact, ugly is more accurate, but, regardless of my cartographic expertise at age 9, it proves the point I want to make to my students. Geography is my passion, and it has been for years.Through undergraduate/graduate studies and time spent in industry, I have been continually fascinated by the knowledge that can be extracted through maps and geospatial analyses. From utilities to engineering and aerial surveys to the front of the classroom, I have applied, taught, and studied GIS to better understand the world around us individually and in team environments. While all aspects of GIS are equally intriguing, my personal interest in the GIS field generally focuses on small-scale projects sites. The recent advent of drones and 3-D modelling have been of particular interest. The new capacity for more accurate imagery and modelling on such a scale opens new windows for analyses. I also find myself using modern geography to better the lives of those less fortunate via humanitarian aid in the developing world. Time spent in Madagascar training local workers to use spatial analytics to better serve their own people is among the most rewarding work imaginable. It is what GIS was built to do!At the end of the day, for me, it does not matter what work is accomplished with GIS, what matters is that I have been able to pass along my GIS skill sets to my coworkers, colleagues, and students. Yes, I enjoy the drones, the international development, and any other topic along the geospatial spectrum; but the real passion lies in the ability to teach GIS to the next generation of students or anyone interested in better understanding the world that surrounds us. I just hope their maps look better than 9-year-old Eric Wagner's maps.

Senior Gis Content Engineer, Learn Arcgis
CurrentAs a Product Engineer, I create educational content to teach new and experienced users about the ArcGIS System. My sepciality is in the area of educational videos as I see this as the future of teaching users how to amplify their GIS work. My areas of focus are: ArcGIS Online, mobile data collection (Field Maps and Survey123), drones, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Solution Engineer, Global Water Practice
As a Solution Engineer, I help water utilities capitalize on all aspects of Esri's geospatial platform. I believe that all employees, regardless of background, experience, or role, can positively contribute to the GIS within their organization. Everyone from the customer service representative at the front desk, to the inspector miles away in the field, to the operations manager in the office can be empowered through advanced location analytics. Specifically, I work with Esri's mobile, desktop, and enterprise applications related to Water, Stormwater, and Sewer infrastructure systems.
Gis Instructor And Laboratory Manager
As the GIS Laboratory Manager, I was responsible for all aspects of Villanova University's Geospatial Laboratory. Broadly, this included: the maintenance/updating of 16 student work stations, the GIS server, plotter, and large format scanner. Administratively, I was the university's point of contact with Esri and Trimble software providers to ensure the smooth functioning of ArcGIS Online and the ArcGIS/Trimble floating license managers. On the university level, I coordinated the use of GIS between three of the university's colleges and provided mapping and cartographic support for other departments to help them better understand and present their data for class and research purposes.Outside of management, I designed and taught all laboratory exercises associated with Villanova's Introduction to GIS class on the graduate and undergraduate levels (GEV 4700 and 7040). This course took students with no geospatial background and provided a quick start into ArcGIS Desktop 10.X starting with the fundamentals and covered coordinate systems, map production, raster analysis, and geoprocessing. Aside from that course, I provided lectures and GIS exercises to the support environmental science and geography faculty; major topics included: drone mapping, image processing, land use change, watershed analysis, and field data collection methods. Finally, I taught and provided student support for the use of Trimble GPS units utilizing TerraSync, Esri's Collector for ArcGIS, and Survey123 for ArcGIS.
Airborne Sensor Operator
During my time at Keystone Aerial Surveys, my primary task was the operation and basic maintenance of survey-grade camera sensors mounted aboard aerial platforms. The sensors were Vexel's Ultracam Ospreys and Falcons used in conjunction with Track Air's SnapShot and SnapBase applications. At times, I would be responsible for managing a team of aircrews ensuring that large-scale projects were completed in a timely, safe, and efficient manner. Aside from data acquisition, I utilized ArcGIS Desktop 10.X to perform analyses of digital imagery to determine areas of possible mosquito populations in Southern California. Other work included: assuring quality control of film and digital data, creating sub-flight plans for other aircrews, general maintenance of the company's aircraft, and training new employees how to accomplish the previously listed tasks
Gis Analyst
As a GIS Analyst, I was responsible for the production of project site maps in the utility, environmental, and geotechnical sectors with ArcGIS Desktop 10.X and AutoCAD. This entailed communicating with several teams in multiple disciplines across the county to provide quality figures for client reports and government permits. In the utility field, I maintained and updated the geodatabase for the Greater New Haven Water Pollution Control Authority and assisted with the authority's GIS quality control. My main environmental project monitored the spread of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) in and around a refinery in western New Jersey. Finally, I trained a college intern to understand the GIS principles at Langan, and helped him to understand the company’s data organizational structure.
Gis Specialist
I was responsible for the daily functioning and maintenance of a natural gas utility company’s GIS with field and office implications. Much of my work consisted of: editing existing and new gas mains, valves, and other company assets with ArcGIS Desktop 10.X based on construction plans and as-builts; generating semi-annual maintenance reports for district managers; updating the company’s existing geodatabases; geocoding of customers’ addresses; offering instructional courses for the use of Trimble GPS units in the field; and organizing training sessions for field crews of the company’s GIS web-viewer. Additionally, I produced maps for the engineering and marketing divisions of the company to help plan for future growth. As the first GIS Specialist at this company, I developed workflows to keep new data organized and provided quality assurance for previously existing datasets.
