About Eric Driscoll

I'm a PhD physical chemist with experience purchasing and troubleshooting analytical equipment and analyzing prodution data in the pharmaceutical industry. I have experience using femtosecond laser technology for time-resolved spectroscopy and integrating hardware and software into scientific instruments. Comfortable doing product research and understanding and communicating technical concepts to non-experts, whether they be team members, stakeholders, or students. In my free time I like to tinker with photography, synth electronics, C#, and my bicycle.

  • University Of Southern California
Graduate Research Assistant. Advisor: Prof. Jahan Dawlaty
University Of Southern California Aug 2012 - Aug 2017
    Greater Los Angeles Area
    ‣ Designed optical assembly for ultrafast broadband UV-vis pump-probe measurements. Enabled research on femto- and picosecond molecular dynamics.‣ Designed broadband balanced detection scheme to suppress noise due to laser power fluctuations. System improvements resulted in ten-fold increase of signal to noise ratio. This lowered detection limit enabled research of low-solubility compounds.‣ Prototyped, tested, and installed custom electronics for triggering detector array in phase with laser repetition rate. Resulted in removal of phase ambiguity from data signals.‣ Wrote LabVIEW and MATLAB programs for rapid data acquisition and analysis. Numerical analyses included combinations of curve fitting, Fourier analysis, and singular value decomposition.‣ Installed laboratory computer workstations, upgraded memory hardware, and ran software updates.‣ Assisted field service engineers with installation of ultrafast laser equipment including oscillator (Vitara, Coherent), regenerative amplifier (Legend Elite, Coherent), optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) (OPerA Solo, Coherent), and acousto-optic pulse shaper (QuickShape IR, PhaseTech) as part of initial lab setup.‣ Troubleshot and repaired alignment problems in OPA and acousto-optic pulse shaper with service engineers in person and over the phone resulting in output power returning to original factory specifications.‣ Primary author of three and co-author of three papers published in peer-reviewed ACS journals on excited state dynamics in molecular systems. ‣ Collaborated with cross-discipline researchers at Caltech resulting in joint theory-experiment publication.‣ Coordinated experiments on shared equipment that required long term planning and consideration for interference with other researchers’ setups. Resulted in less time spent on re-building and re-alignment.
  • University Of Southern California
Teaching Assistant Lecturer. Advisor: Prof. Jessica Parr
University Of Southern California Jan 2017 - May 2017
    Greater Los Angeles Area
    ‣ Prepared and delivered 10 lectures to a 200-student general chemistry class on the topics of thermodynamics and acid-base equilibrium. ‣ Utilized multiple modes of communication including chalkboard, PowerPoint, student response “clickers”, and demonstrations.
  • Gilead Sciences
Process Development Intern, Department Of Technical Services
    Gilead Sciences May 2016 - Jul 2016
    San Dimas, Ca
    ‣ Designed apparatus for rapid in-process spectroscopic measurement of turbidity during AmBisome production. Resulted in reduction of sample preparation time and user contact with hazardous materials.‣ Created software interface and user manual for control of turbidity instrument with LabVIEW.‣ Performed comparability study of dynamic light scattering particle sizing instruments to ensure instrument upgrades did not influence measurement accuracy or precision.‣ Installed replacement UV-vis and wrote SOP for collecting light scattering measurements with new instrument. Enabled scientists to continue working despite old instrument malfunctioning.‣ Participated in Gilead San Dimas Toastmasters chapter to improve public speaking and presentation skills.
  • University Of Southern California
    Teaching Assistant Laboratory
University Of Southern California Aug 2012 - Dec 2013
    Greater Los Angeles Area
    ‣ Delivered weekly pre-lab lecture and managed 20-student analytical and general chemistry laboratory sections for three semesters.‣ Answered student questions in person during weekly scheduled office hours and via email.
  • Harvey Mudd College
National Science Foundation Research Experience For Undergrauates
Harvey Mudd College May 2011 - Jun 2011
    Claremont, Ca
    ‣ Fabricated dye sensitized solar cells and measured current-voltage characteristics to calculate efficiency.‣ Conducted air sensitive synthesis of a Ru-porphyrin based dye in a glove box. Characterized samples with ESI LC-MS.‣ Presented results in poster format at American Chemical Society national meeting.
