I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant with Virginia Tech's Hume Center for National Security and Technology. I collaborated with machine learning experts to develop research methods for model selection aimed at minimizing cost in linear models and machine learning applications.

I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant through the Virginia Tech Department of Statistics, as part of the academic consortium for the DoD's Project Maven. We worked to evaluate computer vision algorithms that analyze full motion video. I helped to develop tracking metrics, establish data management, and identify underlying environmental and situational factors that affect object detection and classification.

Led collaboration projects with student and faculty researchers across engineering, biology, and sociology departments at Virginia Tech. Instructed short courses in R graphics and model selection techniques for Virginia Tech student and faculty professional development.Provided weekly consulting assistance to university researchers through statistical analysis and design of experiments.

I worked on a variety of statistical consulting projects across 3M as an intern for Optimized Operations (O2 ) under the Lean Six Sigma Operations (LSSO) group. I collaborated with groups of 3M employees from Compliance, the Abrasive Systems Division, and the Industrial Minerals Product Division. My primary project of interest required setting a specification for a particular raw material produced by 3M. A Gage R&R study was performed on data from several lots of the raw material to obtain a fitted distribution for the data measure, appropriate measures of control for the raw material by lot, and an acceptance specification based on inherent variability in the samples and the measurement process.I also worked on a sentiment analysis for 3M's Compliance team, and reviewed a sampling plan for testing whether roofing shingles made of 3M granules conform to Scotchgard quality standards.

I worked with Principal’s Implementation Program Office, a team of Project Analysts and Project Managers responsible for the overall execution of IT programs. I primarily researched capabilities of SAS Visual Analytics to prove its utility for metrics dashboards. I established use cases for dashboards and investigated the drill-down capabilities of SAS VA. I also helped complete results tracking for the department’s life insurance campaigns. I organized and cleaned data files from the campaigns and implemented validation processes to increase accuracy of results. Additionally, I established spreadsheets and graphs to distribute to business sponsors to monitor campaign progress.

I worked with developers to test applications for Clemson University's Software Development and Integration Group (SDI), contributing to more than 20 projects. I documented bugs and inconsistencies and provided feedback about usability; throughout my internship I used tools including JIRA, Confluence, Trac, and Slack.I also created test cases, performed regression testing, and monitored user experience. In 2016 I helped to create a detailed test plan which outlined SDI’s development and QA processes across all development teams.

I worked on efforts to promote STEM fields; I primarily developed engaging STEM activities for the Foothills YMCA 2016 summer camp in Seneca, SC. I also planned a new EMAG!NE website with attractive content for students, parents, teachers, and volunteers. Finally, I began creating an accessible repository of applied activities, organized by SC standards, for K-12 science and math teachers to integrate into lesson plans.

I had the opportunity to observe, develop, and present lessons for an Algebra II class at Liberty High School in Liberty, SC. I supervised classroom activities related to algebra, critical thinking, and ACT preparation. I visited the school between two and three times each week, during which time I gained experience developing and organizing instructional materials, implementing technology in a classroom setting, and communicating with educational professionals.

I worked as an undergraduate research assistant as a participant in the Clemson Calhoun Honors College undergraduate research program during the summer of 2013. I worked with Clemson’s School of Computing to design, record, and analyze surveys and behavioral response data from a human-centered computing project that aimed to provide an interactive simulation for training nurses. I helped to examine the impact of virtual human animation on the emotional responses of participants.
