Dedicating seventeen years in education, I have learned that my passion is equitable access to learning for all kids. While advocating for students to have the right to become lifelong readers and writers is still one of my missions, the core of why I began this journey is simple: doing right by all kids. I’ve gone inside classrooms, district offices, and board rooms providing the rationale and program ideas on how to impact student learning in the classrooms. I’ve modeled alongside educators to not only tell them how learning could happen, but also show them. The last two years, I have shifted my expertise to the development world. My past work made me a notable collaborator in telling the story of our work to become intriguing to funders. I worked alongside our Development Director brainstorming and designing programs such as the Leveling the Learning project that focuses specifically towards the ELL audience. While that project was successfully funded, other projects caused us to learn, rethink and adjust. I also designed and hosted a virtual space, “Chew and Chat,” where I interviewed leading trailblazers on topics worth exploring to push the needle in student learning. Some of the guests included Dr. Rod Paige, the 7th United States Secretary of Education and Kate Walsh, President of National Council on Teacher Quality. My ability to notice what’s needed and create a space for it is forward thinking and is what pushes me daily in being a catalyst in student success. This past year, I have moved into the Development Manager role. While new in this position, I have celebrated huge successes. I reengaged 100% of the board members to financially support the work by establishing healthy relationships. I have formed relationships with new donors who are excited to be a part of impacting kids. While this part of my journey has been a great learning experience, I’ve grown to learn that my true passion and gift lies in action in the community and schools. My boldness and passion for further equity is too big to not be a part of the work happening in the field. During my time outside of work, I have invested time and energy in leading service work in two national organizations: Xi Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Bayou City Houston Chapter of National Women of Achievement, Inc.. I have served in positions to lead the work in meeting all priorities and goals of the organization.
