I’m Dr. Erica Shelley, and for over a decade, I've been at the helm of Best for Bees, combining science, beekeeping, and business to create innovative solutions for honeybee health. With a B.A. in Biology from Johns Hopkins and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Medical Genetics from Oregon Health and Sciences University, I led the creation of the award-winning ProtectaBEE™, which won a world silver medal in Beekeeping Innovation in 2023. A major focus of my work has been in collaboration with Dr. Peter Kevan on apivectoring research, using biological controls like fungi to combat pests inside the hive.As CEO, I manage teams of 10+ people, handle hiring, and lead international expansion efforts through partnerships with retail stores and industry leaders. Our Bee-AI program uses Big Bee Data to forecast crop production, measure ecosystem health, and shift from reactive to predictive beekeeping. I also frequently speak at conferences and events, covering the importance of bees, sustainable agriculture, and how big data can enhance ecosystem health. My mission is to lead innovations that benefit beekeepers and the entire agricultural industry by building sustainable, data-driven solutions.
