Legal Research Assistant
I was given a contract with the Law Society of Nunavut to conduct a legislative review regarding disability law and accommodations within the territory of Nunavut. I examined legislation for both the private and public sector to determine if there was legislation in place to ensure those with physical disabilities were being accommodated in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities. I summarized my research findings in a report I drafted and included my recommendations on the direction of the research moving forward.
Ipc Placement Student
I completed my Practice Placement component of Bora Laskin Faculty of Law's Integrated Practice Curriculum in this role. This placement acted as an equivalent to the experiential learning traditional Articling fulfills. In this role I had primary and full carriage of all files under Part III of the Provincial Offences Act. I appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice on a weekly basis regularly handling matters under the Highway Traffic Act and the Dog Owners Liability Act as well as regularly conducting Trials in Absentia.
Research Assistant
As a Research Assistant I worked on a project which centred on the intersection between Constitutional Law and health. Specifically, this project focused on the intersection between Constitutional Law and individuals diagnosed with dementia and their rights post-diagnosis. In this role, I summarized and drafted a plain language document consisting of relevant research pertaining to disability and rights. The content of this document was made up of research from a variety of sources including: legislation, UN declarations, caselaw, policies, and directives. In this role I also drafted a pamphlet meant to be used as a public legal education tool with information those with dementia could use if they had questions regarding their rights.
Dean’S Fellow / Teaching Assistant
As a Teacher's Assistant and Dean's Fellow, I conducted weekly research in the area of Criminal Law. In this role, I used real world examples from the news and media to explain and illustrate criminal law principles and provisions of the Criminal Code. I also planned and led several tutorials with the First Year Criminal Law class. This planning included creating exercises such as developing hypotheticals to pose to the students, developing questions to pose to the students, as well as working through the Criminal Code with tips an tricks to make it more accessible and easily used.
Summer Law Student
In this role, I worked on a number of varying projects. I conducted general research for the use of the Law Society on a variety of topics. I also worked on and developed a number of access to justice initiatives. In addition, I updated and drafted a number of policies. For example, I updated the the Discipline Policy after doing an extensive review of the policies in other Canadian jurisdiction. I created a Draft Fitness to Practice Law Policy, again after conducting an extensive review of policies in other jurisdictions. Lastly I drafted a Workplace Harassment Policy for the Law Society of Nunavut's internal use.
Justice Education Fellow
I was a Justice Education Fellow during my second year of law school, in this role I created, organized and facilitated public legal education programs throughout the City of Thunder Bay. As I was a Summer Student with the Ontario Justice Education Network, the programs I had been working on as a Summer Student, became my Justice Fellow projects.
Summer Intern
As a Summer Student, I primarily worked as support to the Ontario Justice Education Network in coordinating and planning their public legal education programming. Two major projects which I worked on as a Summer Student were the Law Symposiums in Toronto and Thunder Bay. I had an active role in coordinating and planning the Law Symposium which took place in Thunder Bay, planning the agenda, deciding upon topics, and recruiting speakers.
Legal Assistant
I was hired to fulfill an eight month contract position where I was to primarily assist the CEO and the EA with administrative tasks such as: general reception duties, processing Standing Certificates, and processing Restricted Appearance Certificates for lawyers practicing within the territory. I also conducted general research on various topics for the Law Society. I developed, drafted, and updated procedures, handbooks, and guides which were used for both internal and external distribution. My contract was then extended to twelve months and I became involved in project coordination, where I planned and delivered public legal education workshops.
