My first rule of traveling is you never cross a border without learning some of your destination's language. Twenty-seven borders later, I have quite the collection of lingo. Now I do the same with web technologies.I am primarily a Ruby and JavaScript developer with most of my experience working in Ruby on Rails, jQuery, and ReactJS. Yes I'm a Ruby fanboy through and through, but I know enough Java and C to know where the magic is coming from.Regarding JavaScript:ReactJS is my cup of tea. I've reverse-engineered the Netflix sliders with it. See "Bolt Network" below.If you must have SPA's written in Vanilla JS and jQuery...OK, see www.rammount.com/mount-builderPC or Mac? I've worked with both. Currently on a 2015 MacBook Pro and a 2018 Dell XPS.Back End:Skinny controllers, skinny models, services to handle the heavy lifting.Modules to share methods and encapsulate.Make small components with small methods and test all the major algorithms.Front End:No page is safe until I have it cornered at 480px, 768px, 992px and 1200px.Sass and Bootstrap are wonderful to work with, but sometimes all you need is a flex-box grid.When you do need Sass, treat it like back end code: test, refactor, and make small components.Database:Store in SQL, retrieve with Elasticsearch. Especially if your website has over 5,000 SKU's.When ActiveRecord can't do it, add a dash of raw SQL.Use services to build each part of an Elasticsearch query, then tie it all together.Testing:I cannot live without test-driven development. If you knew how many bugs were in your code, it was because you tested it.
