Civic Knowledge provides data analysis services to nonprofits, governments, journalists and social benefit corporations. We have a strong preference for solving social problems, with major projects involving homelessness, economic productivity, managing ESG datasets, AI analysis of government contracts and resumes, and water quality. Our projects employ a broad range of technologies, from statistics to machine learning, and much of our work is pro-bono, and we always remember that there are people behind the numbers.Our current project involves building a system to compute a "career trajectory" from a person's resume or linked profile, which can be used to help career changers find jobs that they have the skills and experience to do, but may not be aware of. The project involves building software to classify jobs experiences, embed those experiences as vectors, and link the vectors into trajectories. We aim for the project to make jobs search more natural and efficient for both employers and job seekers.

The San Diego Regional Data Library helps civic and social organizations get the data they need to tell their stories to the public, policymakers and their funders. We acquire data, clean and publish it, and run public data analysis projects to teach citizens how to use data to better understand their communities. The Data Library finds, processes and packages socially important data, such as homeless counts, schools finances, population data, and makes that data useful to government and nonprofits. We also manage data analysis internship opportunities for students andcareer-changers.

Clarinova develops collaborative marketing software that allows national brands, distributors, government agencies and social service organizations to distribute product and service information to consumers by using the extensive networks of their local affiliates.

I began with PTN as the first technical employee to design and build the next generation of their health care RFP application. Over the next three years I was the system architect and lead programmer and led the team of employees and contractors that built and operated the system.

As an instructor in the UCSD Extension Systems Engineering Certificate Program, I taught the Software Systems Requirements Engineering course.

Recognizing a need for operators of convenience stores to mange the disparate back office systems of multiple stores, I reverse-engineered the legacy systems used in AM/PM stores and created a system for updating and tracking inventory at multiple stores that integrated with the existing systems.

As part of the IETF Calendaring Working Group, I managed post-publication editing for RFC 2445, contributed to RFC 3283, and implemented the ICal protocol as an Open Source library, which is now used in dozens of commercial and Open Source Calendar Applications.

Designed and documented software processes and worked with team leads to analyze project performance and develop plans.
