All I could think about at school was Music and Art, academia came later in life. I played the Trombone, loved painting and was sure I would head off in that direction as a profession but, my parents put their foot down and insisted that I "get a trade first, and then do that arty rubbish later”.So, off I went, a spotty, misunderstood ‘New Romantic’, to be an apprentice electrician in heavy construction, refineries and eventually, offshore.Since then my journey has been an interesting one, moving from Technical, Health and Safety, Quality, Sales, Marketing and Business Development, General Management, Senior Leadership and now 'end to end' business transformation through Social Media. Everything I have done professionally has linked together to bring me to where I am today, I'd love to tell you I planned it this way...Building meaningful connections has been a thread running through my life. People who know me will tell you I am a social person, sometimes too much. My Primary 4 report card said, “Eric works well in groups but not so much on his own”, Mrs Borland got that right. So, it’s fitting that today I spend my professional life transforming individuals and organisations to become successful through Digital Media. I have always loved a challenge. When one of my friends suggested we head off to the Sahara Desert and enter the Marathon Des Sables in 2013, I jumped at the chance...why not? I realised how much of a terrible error I had made when I turned up at the start line in Morocco for 6 marathons, in 6 days, in near 50 degree heat…I made it to the last day and collapsed without finishing. So, I went back in 2015 and did it properly, my MDS medal is one of my dearest possessions and the amazing people I met there are life-long friends. 👆I gave a TEDx talk on that very subject, you can find the link in my featured content section, but I must warn you about the feet! You'll know what I mean if you watch it....(apologies in advance!!)To find me at my happiest would mean you’ve found me on a mountain with family and friends, either flying down a track on the mountain bike or on skis, for me there is nothing better. Music and Art are still a huge part of my life, check out my Instagram 'hoodathunkpictures’ - don’t be too harsh.!I run a Digital Influence training company with a difference by day and I'm a wannabe member of Queens of the Stone Age by night...We are based in Aberdeen, Scotland but can work with you remotely anywhere on the planet. This is a little part of me, I'd love to hear about you...

Social Selling Coach - Strategic Social Media SpecialistDla Ignite Apr 2020 - Feb 2023Uk And NorwayBehind the curtain...As a business leader heavily involved in Sales, Marketing and BD, I could see there was a change in the wind in early 2017, clients were changing how they interacted with the supply chain. I found that cold calling, emailing and advertising were beginning to prove inefficient, something was changing. The change was the shift to social selling...I read and researched more into this and things began to come clear. I needed more clarity and wanted to find the best source of information. We believe that social media is the best tool for organisations to communicate with their audiences.Staff, customers, prospects, investors, potential hires whoever it might be it seems these days that everyone is on social media (or accessible through it) and with every passing year they are spending more and more time engaging on these social platforms. Despite this, very few businesses have been able to gain success with their social media activities.Fear, lack of understanding, lack of direction or application, difficulty in changing people’s habits are often cited as reason for this. However, the fact remains that for the first few businesses to get it right the potential rewards are outstanding. We have taken our extensive consulting expertise in solving the problems involved in using social media and turned this in to a series of programmes to tackle specific business issues. These programmes are predictable, repeatable and reliable. In essence, we help our clients create a Social Media Strategy and deploy that across various functions within the organisation in a safe, appropriate and effective way.My role at DLA was to help individuals and organisations realise what they want and need from Social Media through Strategy, skill and rigour. It all starts with building meaningful connections.... -
Managing DirectorPipetech Operations Uk & Pipetech International As Mar 2017 - Jan 2020Aberdeen, United KingdomUnblocking the blockage...I joined, Private Equity backed, Ramco Tubular in October 2016 as a consultant. My role was to assist in the Market Analysis and development of a specific product that one of their group member companies had designed. The company was Pipetech, and I set about getting under the skin of the product and associated market opportunities. I spent a significant amount of time going between the Aberdeen and Stavanger bases, it was great to be back In Norway, which had become my second home. I completed my analysis and presented a position paper outlining to the Ramco board, what I felt should be done. This was accepted, we set the plan and started work.In early 2017, I was asked to take over as Managing Director of Pipetech. This was an interesting challenge as the company required a full restructure, reset and relaunch. The initial challenge was to work out 'why' we do what we do, 'how' doing that makes us interesting to clients and 'what' we do differently. Im a big believer in the Simon Sinek 'start with why' model and have seen amazing company transformations when its applied and 'lived'.Everything hinged on what the markets told us, this involved us knowing more about our markets. Then came the strategy development which led to a restructure an rebranding. We changed out internal and external perception of what we were. We defined what set us apart from the competition and really pushed this in the market , this was an area we could take the lead. So, with new structure, new culture, new image and a clear market focus...we went to work.We took the company into new territory: geographic, sector and market. The machine started to kick in. Project wins, unseating competition and developing new ways of working. During my time as MD of Pipetech, I also served as an Executive Director on the Board of Ramco Tubular at group level. All good things come to an end... -

DirectorScd Consult Sep 2016 - Feb 2017Aberdeen, United KingdomGoing it alone...After my experience at Aquaterra Energy, I decided to take some time out of the corporate world and set up a solo Consultancy. I knew that my skill set and experience would be of use to SMEs and I found a niche assisting Private Equity organisations grow small businesses, quickly finding traction.I focussed on delivering fixed cost Sales, Marketing & PR and Business Development support with absolute flexibility. I offered to assess a clients 'sales engine' and help tune it.This consultancy didn't really get off the ground as I won my first project and after 3 months was asked to take over as MD of the company I was consulting for...I did get a taste of the consultancy world and enjoyed it. I vowed to return at some point but, for now had to focus on the new MD role (see above).

Regional Director - EuropeAquaterra Energy Ltd Jul 2013 - Sep 2016Aberdeen, United KingdomVenta Icenorum...A head-hunter from Korn Ferry contacted me in my last weeks at Oceaneering, asking if id be interested in meeting the MD of an Oilfield services company based in Norwich. The MD had recently been appointed and was looking to 'do something special' in Aberdeen. They were privately owned at the time, had ambitious growth plans, a good spirit and seemed to have some interesting market opportunities and plans, I was interested.I was inspired by the MD’s vision and admired his history. I knew and understood the products and services from my history in drilling and subsea. The company did some work in Aberdeen but didn’t have a presence there. They had recently acquired an office in the West End of the City and needed someone to run and grow it. I joined as General Manager is May of 2012 and began the build.I applied all of my learning to date. Starting with the TAM analysis (it always does..), speaking to clients to see what what they felt about our sector, repacking our message and growing a capable team. We began to take work from the competition and establish a name for ourselves, we were growing and had a great team. The stand out moment for the team was us winning the Catcher drilling template project for Premier Oil, a game changing project which was delivered on time and on budget.I went on to take over as Regional Director for Europe and became a Executive Board member of the company. We were on track, doing well in the market and taking share. Out reputation was growing and we were doing things differently and being noticed. The MD that hired me into the company left in the Summer of 16, I left pretty soon after him. -

Country Manager Uk - Managing Director Of Agr Integrity Uk - Vp Sales & MarketingOceaneering Asset Integrity Jul 2011 - May 2012Aberdeen / BergenCrossing borders...I was introduced to AGR by an Executive Search company. I met Aage Landro the Exec VP and was impressed by his focus and vision, I joined in the Summer of 2011. Prior to my start date, Aage invited my wife and I to the Summer party in Bergen to meet the team. We travelled over to Bergen an attended the open air concert, the team were great. This was a friendly and open bunch of professional people, welcoming and caring. A few weeks after the party I was off to Bergen for the first of what would become regular trips. I fell in love with Bergen and miss going back there. We specialised in pipeline inspection, which was great as I could pull from my IMR days in Acergy, I knew this space well. We developed unique systems with third parties and took them to market, we broke into Offshore Wind and began to grow the business.I had several roles in this company but it never felt overwhelming, we had lots of great support and the culture was strong.I joined to help square up my region in preparation for exit. The process began in the Summer of 2012 and our company was purchased by Oceaneering. At the time, I didn't see a career path for myself at Oceaneering, I stayed for the handover and transition and left 3 months after the sale. -
Alternative Energy Manager / Group Business Development ManagerXodus Group Feb 2010 - Jul 2011Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomWind, wave and tidal...I was introduced to the CEO of Xodus, Colin Manson, who was looking to fully understand the Alternative Energy market and see if there was scope and space for Xodus. I had worked with some renewables clients at Acergy and was attracted to the industry. I joined and immediately threw myself into this interesting and new market. I went to meet the main players, the clients and the big service companies, the consultants and contractors, asking questions and learning. I spent time in the central belt of Scotland, around the coast of England and Holland. I attended all the shows and events, the seminars and conferences - I sucked up as much as I could about the world of renewables and built it all into a Total Addressable Market analysis (TAM) with my recommendations, strategy and plan. TAM is the cornerstone of any good Sales and Marketing strategy, without this you are feeling in the dark, I still use this method today with clients. We put the plan into action, restructured the internal piece, adjusted our external message and brought in the people we needed to fill the gaps. We began the marketing drive, we were pitching and canvassing and before long we were receiving inbound. We got on bid lists, started tendering and won work.In the Summer of 2010 we acquired a consultancy in the renewables engineering space, this gave us even more credibility and capacity. The owner was a credible name in renewables, had a long track record and was well respected - it was clear they should lead this group and take over the new 'Low Carbon' division . My take away from this time was, my training and grounding in the science and art of Sales and Marketing can be applied to any product, service or sector.I moved out of the Low Carbon group, taking a new role as group Business Development. Although I enjoyed this, it wasn't what I originally joined for and things were changing at Xodus, I realised it was time to look for something new. -
Imr Marketing ManagerAcergy Sep 2008 - Feb 2010GlobalThe Sale of the Century...I was given the opportunity to join Acergy's Sales, Marketing and Business development team, re-train in sales and marketing and take over a 'safe' product line 'Inspection Maintenance and Repair' (IMR).Some of my peers thought this was an odd move, how on earth does Health and Safety translate to Sales and Marketing? As I began to study the science behind these topics, I realised that Id been doing it for years and didn't know it....If you can come up with an idea, package and broadcast that idea, get people to see it, engage with the concept, accept it and commit to adopting it - you've marketed it and sold it right? I'd been doing this for years in Health and Safety so, Id been in Sales and marketing for years and didn't make the connection. A senior guy was asked to take me under his wing and teach me the ropes, forever indebted to Tony Henderson for his time, wisdom and patience.I got into Business Development, many have the title, few understand the role fully. Today we have Sales people calling themselves BDMs, generating leads, selling and doing no BD work (?) Tony was highly skilled in the art of 'seeing through issues' and making mental connections which he then put into play. "If we took this, matched it with that, brought these suppliers to do this...then we have something new we can sell which nobody else does.....". Real Business development and product management working to build a competitive position in the market, for the Sales people to sell.I got into Sales & Marketing strategy and planning, tendering, pricing, third party services, pitching and closing deals - I loved it and had found my new place in life. After a year of so, there had been changes in the management team. The culture had changed and the guy that brought me into Sales was leaving, I decided I was time to move on. -
Hseq Director - Marine AssetsAcergy Jun 2006 - Sep 2008Drilling to Subsea....I had been approached by Stolt previously but didn't feel I was the right fit for the role at that time and, I wasn't compelled to leave what I was doing and join. One day I opened the Energy section of the Press and Journal. there was a double page spread announcing that Stolt were changing name to Acergy. The article claimed that this was more than name change, it was a complete philosophy and cultural change, I was interested.Literally a few days after reading the article, I was approached by an Exec Search company to see if I'd be interested in joining Acergy, the role was HSEQ Director of Marine Assets. Forever indebted to Mark Ellington for remembering me from the Stolt interview and putting my name forward for this new role.I met with the VP of Marine Assets, Brian Leith, and we had the strangest and funniest interview Ive ever had. It was over lunch and he had 2 packets of sandwiches on his desk and told me to pick one. I asked him to chose the one he wanted and I would take what was left over, he said no "I want to see what one you chose, it'll tell me if I like you or not...", I guess I chose the correct sandwich...I had a rude awakening to how Subsea Installation and IMR would differ from Offshore Drilling. Clearly I understood the practical differences in markets and operations but the transition was greater than I anticipated. It took me a while to get my head around the projects being the master and the vessels merely tools in the project. My role was to co-ordinate HSEQ for the Global vessel and ROV fleet, the Marine crews and the equipment. On a given day we had people and vessels across Europe, Africa, Asia pacific and the Americas. I was a member of the Global HSEQ leadership team and worked with some amazing people. We used to run an onshore conference for the offshore management team. After a series of these at St Andrews I was tapped on the shoulder by the VP of Commercial who had a proposal... -
Hseq Manager - Europe And AfricaDiamond Offshore Jun 2000 - Jun 2006Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomMy first office job...In my career, 'the office' was a mystical, fabled place. That's where 'they' were, 'them'....those office people that don't relate to 'us', now I was one of 'them'. I had never worn a suit to work before, I had never had an office, I found it fascinating and adapted quickly . Great people with a different view of the world, different types of problems. I came from 'its broken, get it fixed quickly' to a more reflective, strategic, collaborative environment, room to breath and think.I started as HSE Supervisor then moved to HSEQ Manager. Running a team of onshore specialists and offshore professionals. I had the responsibility for the upkeep of the company managements systems and the Offshore Safety Cases for each rig, I now worked with clients and regulators. We put together a dream team of quality, safety and environmental people and set about changing the position of this department from one of 'command and control' to 'support and advise', we even managed to complete the process of getting a UK rig compliant work in Norway, which was an enormous challenge. We did something special, as a (whole) team we changed the game. We improved culture, changed perceptions, 'opened things up', got respect and pride back into the discipline, received recognition from our industry, won global awards from our clients and less people were hurt at work. We also inspired lots of people to follow new paths. As became a theme in my life, I continued learning. I took NEBOSH to Diploma level and entered many other interesting areas of development.By mid 2006 we were in a good place. I had taken this as far as I could, it was time to hand over the baton. Years later that I realised this was my MO for life - fix and move on. The interesting part for me is the fix, the journey, the win....when that is done, I'm looking for the next challenge. After 15 years in Offshore Drilling, could I transfer into a different sector of Oil and Gas? -
Rig Safety OfficerDiamond Offshore Jan 1997 - Jun 2000Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom....it turns out I could. One day, after a gruelling shift, wrestling with some big cables, on my back, lying in a cold puddle, I spotted a poster on the notice board. The Aberdeen office was looking to train the first UK Safety Officer, until then all the Safety people came over from the US and rotated out. I typed up an application letter, sent it ashore to the HSEQ Director and got the job.I believed that my colleagues would be pleased for me, quite the opposite. The first year in this new role was the toughest ever in my career to date. People I had strong relationships with for years, now didn't speak to me or went out of their way to make life even more difficult. Lost in a strange no-mans land between the management team (who didn't want me there) and the crew (who thought I was a turncoat/spy). No-one could understand why I had (quote) "thrown my trade away to do this crap...". However, I stuck with it and began to piece together what worked and what didn't. Epic fail after epic fail, it started to come round. I realised I was trying to apply a 'one size fits all' solution to a problem that didn't have 'one size'.I continued learning whilst on leave, completing NEBOSH certificate, quality courses and other specific training that took me deeper into the inner sanctums of Health, Safety and Quality and, I loved it.By the end of my time in this role I had found my place and people had found their place with me. I think we created something magical on that rig, a complete team effort for change and improvement - a huge cultural change in a 3 years. I put this down to hard work, persistence and good people. Namecheck to my opposite number Neil Hall who went onto greatness in the field, probably the only person who can relate this or, perhaps other safety professionals can?The year 2000 started with tragedy, 2 fatalities on 2 separate North Sea units called for change and I was asked to move onshore and join the management team. -
Rig ElectricianDiamond Offshore Sep 1991 - Jan 1997Aberdeen, Scotland, United KingdomTo see the Sea...Pretty quickly after finishing up with Balfour Kilpatrick, I got an interview through an employment agency with Diamond Offshore. I met with Dusty Miller, the Technical Services Superintendent on a Saturday morning. Dusty hired me for 3 months thought the agency and sent me off to Invergordon to join the Ocean Guardian drilling rig, which was alongside for inspection and upgrade....2 important things: I didn't know where Invergordon was or what a drilling rig was. I also didn't realise that this train trip from Aberdeen to the Black Isle would be the start of a 15 year journey with Diamond Offshore which would allow me to travel the globe, grow as an individual, change occupation/s and find my true path in life.In the Electrical world, moving from installation to maintenance is a huge leap. I had to rethink everything I had learned and start again. I had my head in the books every night; work, read, ask questions, read more, ask more questions...repeat. I got on well with the crew and was asked to stay as the rig was preparing to go to work. Contracts changed and I was now a DODI employee. Our first project was for VODL at Foinhaven, an amazing project that saw us install a flowline from the aft end of the rig to the Vigdis Knutsen tanker. I was involved in so much on that rig and learned an amazing amount about diagnostics, SCRs, DC controls, generators....the list goes on. I also learned about pressure, the 3am call to come to the rig floor as the top drive had stopped. Company man, Night pusher, driller, AD and all the crew (even the OIM and Rig supt) just standing, waiting for you to 'fix it'.Eventually, I was asked to represent my crew as 'Safety rep' the link on safety between the management team and the crew. I accepted and headed off to night school on my leave to attend the IOSH 'Managing Safely' course. Safety management fascinated me and got me thinking...would it be possible for me to do this professionally? -
Apprentice To 'Time Served' ElectricianBalfour Beatty Kilpatrick Aug 1986 - Aug 1991Greater Glasgow AreaAll wired up...I started my 4 year apprenticeship with Balfour Kilpatrick (BK as they were known back then), a large and well respected electrical contractor. Initially on block release - 2 weeks at College (Reid Kerr, Paisley) and 2 weeks on site.BK had a vast range of divisions and at the end of each block at college we would be assigned to a different division. This gave the apprentices a great grounding and rotation through everything from light domestic work (housing developments), through heavy commercial (shopping malls/distilleries/airports) and into special projects (refineries, chemical plants). As well as learning a trade, I was learning about people and projects. How it all came together and could easily go off track if not well managed. I worked with some amazing people and some horrors, that was another significant learning step...not everyone is out to teach and help you!As I was coming to the end of my apprenticeship, I had to decide which division I would join. For me it was clear, it had been for years...I wanted to join Special Projects. I loved the complexity of large industrial facilities, the processes, the safety systems. I wanted to stay in refineries, processing plants and hazardous sites, it was interesting and exciting. This was also a route for me to get where I ultimately wanted to go...offshore.My last project with BK was the most interesting I did with them. I was selected to join the crew that would go offshore to the hook-up of Marathon Oil's East Brae platform. This meant a lot of firsts for me: First survival course (at Robert Gordons on King Street, Aberdeen), first trip on a helicopter to work, first time staying on a Flotel...and so on. I spent a year on that project and then a few months on post-hook-up commissioning. When the project was complete I was assigned to BP in Grangemouth, then made redundant. I was only heading one way - Back to Aberdeen and offshore.... -
News SectionWhsmith Feb 1985 - Jan 1986Glasgow, Scotland, United KingdomRead all about it..!Once I realised delivering milk was not for me, I got myself a Saturday job in WH Smiths on Argyle St in Glasgow. My job: -stocked the thousands of magazines and newspapers - the shelves had to be full and neat.-run the tills-kept the shop tidy-customer supportI loved this job, it was the largest news section in Glasgow City centre and it was packed with people from 8-5. Even as a teenager, I learned so much that stayed with me throughout my life: How to count quickly! How Customer Service can make or break a sale, how the appearance of your shop can grow or shrink your customer base, how to up sell/cross sell and, how a well managed team can achieve anything. It was a sad day when I left WH Smith to go and start my apprenticeship. It still embarrasses me when I think back to asking the training officer if it would be ok if I kept my Saturday job at Smiths.... -
Milk Delivery BoyMitchells Diary Nov 1984 - Dec 1984Erskine, Scotland, United KingdomSpilled Milk...This was my first every paid job. I delivered milk before school to make some cash for Christmas.Role description: -Meet van at 04:30am-Jump out the side door of a van doing 20mph with 2 creates of milk. -Put milk bottles on doorsteps of customers quickly and get back to where the van was parked. -Run to where the van is parked within the time limit or he will leave without you-Go home, go to school, fall asleep at school.-Friday evenings - Go round to houses and collect the milk money (and tips....)Lessons learned: -Eric doesn't do well with getting up at 04:30 -Falling from a van with 2 crates of milk is painful, embarrassing and expensive.-Falling asleep in class doesn't go down well with the teacher/headmaster-People are generous around Christmas-The nicer you are and the more care you show, the more tips you make.-Farmers don't like it when you send your Dad out at 04:40, in the snow, to tell them you have quit.
