Thankfully, this project is completely self driven, in that the student selects their faculty mentor and topic. My chosen topic was inertial navigation, which utilized a custom built Inertial Measurement Unit provided by my mentor. This was made using an Arduino, an SD card reader, and a IMU unit which provided acceleration and angles in both Euler and Quarternion formats. The research project was primarily focused on the analysis of this collected data and calculating position from that data. Preliminary research was completed on inertial navigation methods, integration techniques, and in analysis of the data calculated. The analysis showed, both by mapping the resulted locations compared with the actual path taken, and in performing analysis on the collected data, show that for the intended purpose, calculating exact position, the IMU used is too inaccurate and too noisy to provide enough resolution and accuracy to determine actual position with any reliability.
