That car spoke to me. The way the grill stretched across the entire front of the car, the way the quarter panels came to an arch, everything felt “right”. I did not know it then but the design of the car was provoking an emotional response from me.I was working as an environmental graphic designer creating retail spaces and corporate tradeshows when I saw the now-famous video of IDEO and redesigning the shopping cart. They focused on the end user's mindset and using that to create a design that solved a problem. This belief that design can be a problem-solving tool is something that has never left me. As I started freelancing and working on projects ranging from printed pieces, package design, and environments (including a mini-golf course) I found this approach of always trying to understand the mindset of the target audience central to my work. I’ve rarely had the chance to interact with the end-user to the extent I would like however that has not dampened my belief that creativity along with a strategic approach can create real connections and foster engagement. When I worked at the University of Minnesota we learned incoming students shared common concerns about; overall costs, fitting in, will they get a job when they graduate. As a result, I created storyboards addressing these issues and identified students to create videos of. Hearing the stories of other students who had recently gone through the 4-year process themselves helped to address this problem. As I continue to grow as a designer, taking on new projects and learning new software such as Webflow or online courses such as the IDEO in partnership with +Acumen Workshop, I reflect back on the value of design and on that 1969 Mercury Cougar.
