Profile bio

About Eric F. Prechtl

My primary focus at Actality is in developing high performance, immersive imaging technologies. Previously, a primary area of development was in panoramic stereo camera systems for 3D reconstruction. However, my more recent contracting role has been on the dual task of video processing for micro-OLED displays. In this role, I have focused on the design and (software and firmware) development of custom PCB platforms incorporating Xilinx FPGAs and STM Microcontrollers for high speed digital video applications. My FPGA systems have incorporated IP such as DisplayPort RX cores, 800 MHz DDR3 memory controllers, AXI streaming interfaces and custom logic for I2C/SPI communications and data processing. In tandem with this effort, as a solo project, I have also developed C++ / Cuda based processing software to perform 120 Hz real-time GPU processing of 4k video streams. My broad experience across a wide range of engineering (and business) disciplines gives me exceptional versatility. I pride myself on being a determined problem solver at the same time as being a reliable and trustworthy collaborator. I am particularly adept at technical communication across audiences from novice end-users to high-level technologists. While my recent contract work has been quite fulfilling, I remain fascinated with the concept of capturing and performing 3D reconstruction on real time panoramic stereo video feeds. There are a remarkable number of applications for this technology in areas such as surveillance, tele-robotics and telecommunications. We are proud to have been issued five patents on our camera design through this development effort. The primary challenge in developing this platform is in the processing algorithms necessary to effectively render the captured scenes in a 3D environment, such as a head mounted display. The processing task not only requires significant communication bandwidth (leveraging my background in FPGA-based embedded systems), but the task of backing out accurate 3D information from 2D images is mathematically quite challenging. The development, implementation and refinement of these algorithms is a current area of focus.Going forward, I continue to look for new opportunities to build upon my significant experience. I’m particularly interested in a leadership role on a team developing high performance computational systems for real world applications.

Listed skills include Embedded Systems, Electronics, Simulations, Engineering, and 28 others.
