Profile bio

About Eric Florin

Eric Florin is a Computer Science and Engineering @ UCLA. Colleagues describe him as "Eric worked on applying machine learning algorithms for classifying large datasets of noisy single particle images over the summer (29/Jun/21 to 20/Aug/21). Eric was new to the subject, but he started off with the right attitude even before the start of the internship; reading up on material and asking questions. He put in the hard work and long hours to accomplish what we set out to achieve. I was particularly impressed with his level of focus and desire to learn. It was a real pleasure to work with him."

Auvsi Software Co-Lead

Los Angeles, California, United States

Co-lead a team of 10 software engineers for the AUVSI SUAS drone project; AUVSI SUAS is an unmanned aerial systems competition geared towards students between high school and graduate school.Derived a list of hardware components and software requirements from a 28-page rulebook covering mission tasks such as autonomous mission acquisition and execution, obstacle avoidance, and object detection and classification.Initiated development of the object detection and classification software by creating a Python script showcasing model inference using the Intel Neural Compute Stick 2, a Python script with an implementation of a convolutional neural network (CNN) from a research paper, and a Jupyter notebook with a step-by-step breakdown of training CNNs.Drafted descriptions of drone's mission requirements and acceptance criteria, on-board imaging system, potential mission risks and mitigations, and alternative choices considered for technical report.Acquired $450 in funding for project with assistance from a team member.Assisted the president of UAS with setting up the club's server, whose purpose is to provide an accessible computing resource to club members, by researching cybersecurity tools and applying for funding for a graphics card.

Firmware Engineer Intern

Hp

Vancouver, Washington, United States

Built an easy-to-use, cross-platform tool for extracting files from R&D printers using Python, PyQt (UI), PySerial (serial communication), and PyUSB (USB interfaces).Researched methods for extracting information about the printer's internal file system using internal commands and serial communication.Collaborated with team members to determine how to use the generic Windows USB driver (WinUSB) for file extraction via Windows systems.Documented the location where users could download the file extraction tool, how-to use the tool, how-to modify the source code, and how-to build the Windows and Linux executables on the internal wiki.Initiated research into possible implementation ideas for an internal memory analysis tool to monitor memory usage in development printers.

Software Engineer Intern

Menlo Park, California, United States

Wrote a script that visualized protein networks based on the structural similarities between the 181,969 proteins in Protein Data Bank using NetworkX, Pyvis, and Protein Data Bank's JSON API.Modified a Jupyter notebook containing a set of multi-output CNNs designed to classify the particle count within an X-Ray diffraction image and the protein the image represented. Modifications included exporting all the CNNs to a separate Python file for easier access by outside scripts, importing a noise function written by mentor through a custom PyTorch transform class, and implementing several data augmentations to generate more particle orientations and simulate different detector distances.Added several features to a Jupyter notebook containing a newly developed twin neural network designed to classify the particle count within an X-Ray diffraction image. Additions included a data loader function that labeled diffraction images as either a single-particle image or "multi-hit" image, a metrics function that calculated the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score metrics of the model, a function that ran the model's classification task, and a demonstration of the model with a focus on audience engagement.Developed a utility Python script containing functions that would calculate the maximum diffraction resolution of an image based on an experiment setup, check for "not a number" values within X-Ray diffraction images, check for blank X-Ray diffraction images, and create a thumbnail version of a given diffraction image.
