Profile bio

About Erich Miller

Excellence in academics and a powerful work ethic allowed me to graduate summa cum laude with a degree in biochemistry. Through careful study of the biological and chemical sciences, I obtained experimental and instrumental skillsets in spectrophotometric analysis, electrophysiology & electrode design, and systematic review & meta-analyses. During my undergraduate years, I led a meta-analytic research team that explored the efficacy and tolerability of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors in the treatment of several neuropsychiatric conditions. Under my leadership, my team published two peer-reviewed publications and presented at several academic conferences. Leading a research team allowed me to design and execute my own independent projects and gave me considerable experience collaborating with others to reach a common goal. I am currently taking a gap year to explore humanistic, clinical, and community service opportunities to expand my soft-skills and forge a stronger connection to my local communities. My future goal is to apply to medical school and pursue an allopathic medical degree (M.D.). As a rising physician, I hope to use my exceptional research abilities and empathy for the patient experience to impact patients through direct patient care and innovative treatment strategies.

Lead Researcher

Reading, Pennsylvania Area

I served as the lead researcher of a meta-analytic team that explored the efficacy and tolerability of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the treatment of several neuropsychiatric conditions. Our first project explored the real-world and clinical trial efficacy of SSRIs in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Our second project investigated the risk of SSRI-induced nausea in the treatment of depressive, obsessive-compulsive, and anxiety disorders. During our teams tenure, we published both projects and presented the preliminary and final results of each project at multiple academic conferences. Leading this research team allowed me to develop several technical and soft skillsets. I learned how to perform: random and fixed effect meta-analyses using Microsoft Excel and Review Manager version 5.3; funnel plot analyses and publication bias assessments; systematic reviews according to the Cochrane Handbook. In terms of soft-skills, I learned how to effectively lead a team, resolve conflicts through open discussion, and collaborate with others to reach a common goal. Overall, performing this academic research was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Research Assistant

Reading, Pennsylvania, United States

I assisted Dr. Joseph Kremer with his research on ruthenium coordination complexes. My tasks were to synthesize novel ruthenium coordination complexes for ultraviolet and infrared spectrophotometric analysis. Additional tasks were to obtain appropriate safety data sheets and maintain safe disposal of exceptionally hazardous chemicals like chromium trioxide, sodium hypophosphite, and dimethyl sulfoxide. During my tenure with Dr, Kremer I successfully synthesized a small sample of a ruthenium coordination complex that was analyzed spectrophotometrically.

Research Lab Assistant/Intern

Reading, Pennsylvania Area

My primary task was to synthesize high-resistance microelectrodes according to Dowben & Rose criteria for use in electrophysiological experiments. Additional tasks included: preparing a Leica CM4500 cryostat for optimal functioning; designing an aluminum sealed Faraday cage; synthesizing a sodium cyanaurate and platinum chloride solution for future electrode plating. By the end of the summer, I had successfully synthesized 15 high resistance electrodes for use in macro-invertebrate and vertebrate electrophysiology. I also successfully prepared the laboratory cryostat for use and completed the aluminum sealing on the Faraday cage.
