• Researched under Dr. Tim Koeth to design weak and alternating variable gradient magnetic focusing mechanisms in order to build a 2 MeV cyclotron, proton accelerator to be used for cancer spectroscopy • Collaborated with other members of research team to balance design constraints between focusing mechanisms and RF system, vacuum chamber, and ion source and extraction systems, to successfully design two sets of machinable magnetic pole tips to be used to focus a 1.2 Tesla field and maximize outgoing ion beam intensity, ensuring effective operation• Analyzed magnetic properties of pole tips using FEA software Ansys Maxwell and simulated ion trajectories using SimIon• Designed CAD for each iteration of pole tip design using Autodesk Inventor, verified structural integrity of designs using FEA software, and drafted machinist drawings for final product
