About Erich Schwartz
I study emergent and potentially transformative technologies and consider the economic, social, regulatory and political issues associated with their adoption and commercialization. Among my technological interests are blockchain and decentralized finance, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and genetics. Before coming to Austin I was a partner at the premier international law firm of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP, where I developed a leading global securities regulatory compliance and investigations practice. Early in my law career I was an enforcement lawyer at the US Securities and Exchange Commission, serving as assistant director of the Enforcement Division in Washington DC. Over the course of my career, I gained deep experience from various perspectives with the implementation of evolving regulatory approaches to a complex and vital industry during a period of extraordinary technological change that substantially transformed the industry. Those experiences inform my current interest in thinking about the application of transformational technologies in ways that advance societal interests, including identifying and developing solutions for problems at the intersection of technology, politics and law.
