The Hispanic Health Opportunity Learning Alliance (H2OLA) program targets first generation college-educated Latino undergraduate students. Students in the program are currently attending California State University, Long Beach and are working on degrees from the College of Natural Science & Math or Health & Human Services. The undergraduate students work closely and regularly with first generation Latino graduate mentor fellows that are able to provide guidance and help them reach their academic goals.As a Graduate Mentor Fellow I focused on mentoring and networking. I met with each of my mentees for an hour every week and we discussed a variety of topics. All the mentees had different needs. Some needed help with time management and schedule planning, others were interested in graduate school information, and some needed tutoring during our sessions. I was also able to provide social support for many of them and be an outlet where they could get rid of some stress that they experienced. As a medical student, I was also able to talk with many of the mentees about applying to medical school and my experiences. Overall, I truly enjoyed my experience as a Graduate Mentor Fellow as I felt that I had a positive impact on their academic goals.
