Originally started in construction as a "Labor" (non-union) in Illinois. Typical labor duties: sweeping, moving material and driving all-terrain forklifts. Within my first week I was bitten by the "construction bug". Lured by the thrill of deadlines plus; already interested in completing and finishing projects, construction management would be my preferred career choice post Military Service. Faced with the, "how do I get in" dilemma I have no experience and no formal education in construction. I battled with myself, why would I waste time going to school and all I was doing was working in construction? I understood an option might include meeting the "right person" that would give you a shot. Networking has always been important, maintaining great working relationships has always been important along with attitude, attention to detail, and team work which makes the dream work. Oddly enough those skills would not be enough alone! "Go to school young man" was the advice of several Superintendents, Project Managers, Company Owners and Presidents, QC managers etc. I figured if these people were advising me to do as such then surely these professionals have their degrees. I found out several of them did not, in fact the advice was being given based off their experiences and their lack of formal education and how much of a struggle it was without a degree. In summary, won't you join me in my journey in becoming a deadline meeting, results driven, eager to learn achiever, who is consistent. There is a difference in your performance when the performance is something you want to do as you may know, I am currently enrolled in Construction Management classes, I seek a position in the construction industry that will allow for growth, education and productivity thus allowing your organization a chance to foster innovative thinking.
