Senior Hardware Design Engineer
Designed 3 Time of Flight sensor rigid flexes, circuit, schematic, and layout. Circuits comprised of Silicon Photo Multiplier (SiPM) devices fed into analog front ends (basic common emitter LNA BJTs configured as a psuedo differential amplifier, AFE for short). These designs required understanding of high-speed signal transmission theory and understanding of analog design topology.Simulated Time of Flight sensors in LTspice. Due to the fact that the new SiPMs used in these designs lacked a feature called a “Fast Output”, analog modifications needed to be made to the AFEs so the flexes would output a signal equivalent to the previous designs. I proposed, simulated, and validated these changes successfully.Validated Class D Amplifier for driving MEMS actuated mirrors for laser pathing. We needed to swap our previous MEMS driver with a new driver with AEC specifications. The only device we could find that could fit our purposes had a different digital input, I2S rather than PDM. I designed a test plan, modifications, and documented all steps on confluence.
Hardware Dev Iii
Designed Mixed signal Data Acquisition Arduino shield utilizing 4 parallel ADS1115 ADCs as well as 4 copies of a discrete piezo load-cell instrumentation amplifier. Due to the sensitivity of the piezo analog circuitry, this design needed to adhere to as many low noise mix-signal constraints as possible. Designed and documented a mass production test fixture for a battery pack with many unique physical constraints. This fixture used off-the-shelf harnesses and inexpensive data acquisition devices. Scaled designs for mass production manufacturing, communication with off-shore manufacturers, developing scripts (Python, C/C++, etc.).Automated tests using Keysight and LabJack tools, as well as other makeshift tools, to provide fast, inexpensive, and reliable solutions.
Contract Hardware Engineer
Worked at many of the major tech companies in the Greater Seattle Area, such as Amazon, Facebook/Meta, and Microsoft as an electrical engineer working on both Design and Test. Listed are some of my favorite accomplishments.Amazon Prime Air - Owner of design and production for a flight control servo built to FAA regulations. Responsible for deliverables from Mechanical and Firmware Engineers, operating as the Electrical Engineer. Interfaced with flight sciences, systems, and international procurement. Managed to solve a device breaking bug discovered 2 weeks before design freeze.Microsoft - Designed an LCR meter fixture to test the passive values of inductors over a range of 0-60 Amps. Designed an I2C statistical characterization GUI in python that turned a week long task into one that can be completed in an afternoon.Facebook Reality Labs - Worked with PHD in signal integrity group to design a test fixture for analyzing the power integrity and signal integrity of a 20 position I-PEX micro-coaxial ribbon cable.Valve - Worked with a small team of world class engineers to design the Valve Index, at the time the VR headset with the highest specifications on the market. While on the team I helped redesign the intra-IC USB system. I also solved two extremely convoluted system breaking bugs, one bug being a situation where IMU noise increased dramatically and signal was no longer discernible between late revisions of the design, the other where a third of our desktop units would die unexpectedly.
Electrical Engineer
Lead electrical designer on industrial test fixture for Medical MRI Cable. Design incorporated an analog RF phase and magnitude measurement analog front end with a bandwidth up to 5GHz. Main system built with one large backplane PCB and up to 4 daughter card PCBs connected by mezzanine board-to-board connectors. Full system was capable of testing RLC coupling between each conductor, as well as each conductor’s shield, on a 255-count micro-coax cable. EE lead on illuminated syringe. Design was based on a PIC microcontroller, a tilt switch, LED drivers, and a Li-Ion battery with associated battery protection circuitry. I was able to significantly reduce the BOM cost for our client by working with the board fab house to fabricate 3 different boards in one panel.Cad librarian for a team of 10 electrical engineers, managing data for multiple projects.Designed a custom integrated SQL database system for integration between our OrCAD/Allegro Components and our Solidworks/Creo libraries.Solved a fundamental issue in OrCAD’s software at the time where there was no tool on the market capable of checking intra-board net connections. Built on Python, my custom framework caught intra-board connection errors instantaneously, saving our clients tens of thousands of dollars in engineering NRE on multiple occasions.
