This is a collaborative research program between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Washington State University (WSU, USA). Other study collaborators include Kenyatta National Hospital, Centre for International Health, Education and Biosecurity (CIHEB), and the Ministry of Health (MOH Kenya). The project is funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Project: "Multiplex HIV Drug Resistance and Viremia Screening in Kenya".My role as a Research Scientist and Co-Investigator includes performing the following tasks:• Multiplex real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) assays.• DNA and RNA isolation using QIAGEN Extraction Kit.• DNA Sequencing using Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). • Analysis of the DNA sequences using RECall software and Stanford University HIV Drug Resistance Database.• Training and guiding student interns and postgraduate researchers.• Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA).

I worked on the "Cambridge-ALBORADA NGS project". This was a research collaboration between Kenyatta University and the University of Cambridge, based at the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology. The University of Cambridge funded the project in the Cambridge-Africa ALBORADA Fund initiative.Key tasks and responsibilities:• Extracted chemical volatiles (allelochemicals).• Performed diagnosis of NGS disease from experimental samples.• Extracted the exudates.• Carried out transmission trials.• Performed Gas Chromatography tandem Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS/MS).• Reared the insect vector, Maestas banda.• Performed taxonomy to identify the Phytoplasma-transmission vector causing NGS disease.• Collected samples from fieldwork in Kisii, Kiambu, Embu, and Meru Counties.

The work was stationed at the Molecular Research Laboratory, located at the University of Nairobi—Clinical Chemistry Department, Kenyatta National Hospital Annex.Project: "Monitoring Adherence Among Patients on Antiretroviral Treatment".Duties and Responsibilities:• Isolated RNA and DNA from plasma, DBS, and whole blood HIV samples.• Performed reverse transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR).• Prepared and reconstituted reagents for use in the laboratory.• Conducted Gel Electrophoresis.• Sequenced DNA using Sanger 3130XL Genetic Analyzer.• Conducted DNA sequence clean-up and alignment.• Performed DNA sequence analysis.

My role involved performing the following laboratory procedures:• High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).• Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS).• Extraction of antiretroviral drugs; Lamivudine, Nevirapine, and Efavirenz from human blood plasma samples.• Inactivation of the HIV in the infected plasma to harmless samples fit for use in the P1 laboratory.
