Erick Turner, MD, is a Professor of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University. He is a clinician-researcher with regulatory experience as an FDA Medical Officer, in which capacity he reviewed INDs and NDAs on psychotropic drugs being considered for FDA approval. Later, while in academic medicine, he served as a member of the Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee (PDAC).Dr. Turner consults with clients regarding drugs already approved and those in the pipeline, esp. whether their safety and efficacy profiles are likely to qualify for FDA approval. However, in order to avoid conflicts of interest, he does not consult to pharmaceutical or biotech companies or companies working on their behalf. His regulatory experience has inspired his academic research, where he uses FDA Drug Approval Packages to obtain a fuller, truer picture of drug efficacy and safety, compared to what is generally available in the published literature. His best-known publication (NEJM 2008) revealed substantial publication bias with antidepressant trials. It received wide coverage in the national and international press, and, according to Scopus, has been cited by >1900 other journal articles, placing it in the 99th percentile. Overall, he has authored or co-authored ~90 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
