I always made sure to keep my Lego box sets together; pieces from one set should never mingle with other sets otherwise, how could you possibly re-assemble sets with pieces out of a bin of thousands? But after being introduced to mixing sets and with it, the freedom to build whatever I wanted, my comfortable box sets back home became immensely boring. Why would you not mix your pieces together? I went from building another cool castle, to building entire worlds. I fell in love with architecture because I wanted to be a better video game designer; a builder of digital worlds. But studying architecture impressed on me the value of design thinking and leaning in on the details. The real world immediately became a much bigger bin of pieces than the comfortable digital worlds I was familiar with. Now, listening curiously and talking with building material manufacturers, contractors, and designers is my past time, and its clear the Lego sets need to be mixed in a smarter way. I’ve learned crafting better design methods means shaping systems that support collaborative design for everyone involved, not just designers. What are your architecture and construction stories? I’m all ears and genuinely interested to hear from you, because better communication is the best tool we have for solving problems, and the industry desperately needs more of it.
