With advances in brain-computer interfaces, innovative neurotechnology products will soon profoundly change the way we live, work and play. A physician-innovator in this area that is poised for considerable growth, I have a unique blend of medical technology domain expertise with the medical, engineering, scientific and investment experience to leverage the promise of technology to improve human health and wellbeing worldwide.I am a frequent speaker to the scientific, medical, and investment community on the promise of brain computer interface technology for the restoration of function. One of my companies, NeuroLutions, is currently engaged with the FDA to bring these technologies to the marketplace.My extensive startup experience, combined with academic rigor, enables me to evaluate and lead a broad array of medical technology efforts and investments. To help quantify my future-forward thinking and strong strategic sense of tomorrow, I have 578 issued patents to date with 1,179 more pending, and more than 120 publications, including journal articles, a book, book chapters and more. As director of the Center for Innovation in Neuroscience and Technology at Washington University, I encourage students to engage with our network of multi-disciplinary mentors to understand the necessary steps and pitfalls required to bring an idea from academia to market (i.e., intellectual property, licensing, conflicts of interest, venture capital financing, etc.). To accomplish this mission, I created the CINT Innovation Fellowship. Former fellows include professors of engineering, a former Mars Mission lead at SpaceX, a senior R&D engineer at CareFusion, and a vice chair of neurosurgery at a prestigious academic institution.In short, vision for the future creates history.I am a Lifetime Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and member of their Selection Committee.
