With advances in brain-computer interfaces, innovative neurotechnology products will soon profoundly change the way we live, work and play. A physician-innovator in this area that is poised for considerable growth, I have a unique blend of medical technology domain expertise with the medical, engineering, scientific and investment experience to leverage the promise of technology to improve human health and wellbeing worldwide.I am a frequent speaker to the scientific, medical, and investment community on the promise of brain computer interface technology for the restoration of function. One of my companies, NeuroLutions, is currently engaged with the FDA to bring these technologies to the marketplace. My extensive startup experience, combined with academic rigor, enables me to evaluate and lead a broad array of medical technology efforts and investments. To help quantify my future-forward thinking and strong strategic sense of tomorrow, I have 578 issued patents to date with 1,179 more pending, and more than 120 publications, including journal articles, a book, book chapters and more. As director of the Center for Innovation in Neuroscience and Technology at Washington University, I encourage students to engage with our network of multi-disciplinary mentors to understand the necessary steps and pitfalls required to bring an idea from academia to market (i.e., intellectual property, licensing, conflicts of interest, venture capital financing, etc.). To accomplish this mission, I created the CINT Innovation Fellowship. Former fellows include professors of engineering, a former Mars Mission lead at SpaceX, a senior R&D engineer at CareFusion, and a vice chair of neurosurgery at a prestigious academic institution. In short, vision for the future creates history.I am a Lifetime Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and member of their Selection Committee. Among other honors, I have received the Chancellor’s Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the Washington University School of Medicine, and the Health Innovators Fellowship from the Aspen Institute, Aspen, Colorado. To discuss raising medical technology ideas or venture capital, or about cutting-edge R&D—or about something else from my profile that sparks an idea for a future-forward collaboration, please contact me on LinkedIn or at ericleuthardt@gmail.com

My contributions include:● 578 issued patents to date● 1,179 patents pending● More than 120 professional publicationsI lead the Leuthardt Lab where our team explores how machines can be controlled by human thought. Through brain computer interface (BCI), these machines create a new output brain channel beyond natural motor and hormonal commands. We’ve received $20 million in grant support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DOD), and other philanthropists. At the Brain Laser Center, I lead a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals and researchers with unparalleled experience as we use MRI-guided laser interstitial therapy to treat brain tumors and more, making surgery safer and less invasive.I’m the founder and director for the Center for Innovation in Neuroscience and Technology (CINT). This cross-disciplinary team consists of leaders in medicine, engineering, business, and law who focus on engaging the changing dynamics of medical research to allow more fluid exchanges of ideas. -

Co-Founder, Chief Scientific Officer, And Board MemberNeurolutions 2008 - PresentSanta Cruz, California, UsI created the core intellectual property that led to the formation of—and ongoing venture investments in—NeuroLutions. The result is a brain computer interface (BCI) that has cleared the way to improve quality of life for patients who are significantly motor impaired. I reimagined how BCIs can allow stroke patients to reconnect with uninjured sides of their brains, and these technologies have been featured on the cover of Stroke. I invented the core technology and led the research team to develop this technology into a clinically-validated one—and then to integrate the science, technology, and medical application into a feasible, actionable development plan. -
