CurrentMetalplant combines Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) with critical metals recovery using nickel hyperaccumulating plants. The idea at the core of the concept is to take the problem of metals like nickel in minerals used for ERW and turn it into a solution by recovering the metals through phytomining and using the revenue to subsidize the ERW process. While the long-term price target of the carbon dioxide removal industry is to get to below $100 per tonne, the long-term price target for nickel is well above the near $20,000 per tonne it is at today.This path has led us to create the world's first dedicated enhanced weathering commercial farms, along with the development of ERW-specific crops and our process also allows us to use a much higher volume of minerals with our hyperaccumulator plants because they have evolved to be tolerant to high pH and trace metals, growing natively in this region on 100% serpentine soils. This allows for a much higher density of CDR per Ha than other implementations of ERW to date (see picture of our 32-plot trial and photo of highest application rate). The serpentine soils we operate on are historically considered non-arable because they already contain high levels of these metals which we are able to recover and remediate over time. (We also have a method for chromium recovery...)Our goal is to make the world’s first economically viable CDR technique that is self-scaling via revenue from co-products. In order to do this, we are vertically integrated from our local quarries containing gigatonnes of magnesium-rich feedstock, to operating our own farms, to developing novel metallurgical extraction processes. By keeping all value at each step inside the company and operating all stages of the process, we can keep our heads down and focus on rapid upscaling in the future without any impediments.
