Eric Matzner is the CEO and Co-Founder of Metalplant, which uses plants to mine for nickel while removing carbon dioxide through enhanced rock weathering.Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is one of the most promising and scaleable technologies for carbon dioxide removal, however, one of the most efficient minerals, olivine, has trace levels of nickel in it that have prevented its widespread use and limited its application rate.Metalplant has developed a method that turns the problem of nickel in olivine it into a solution that greatly improves the economics of the ERW process. With levels of nickel traditionally impossible to economically recover, Metalplant's patent-pending process is able to recover the nickel in an economically viable way, removing around 300 tonnes (gross) of carbon dioxide for each 1 tonne of nickel produced. Nickel is a critical mineral that is in high demand for use in the clean energy transition, with a 19X increase predicated by the IEA for use in EV batteries. A tonne of nickel sells for around $20,000 per tonne. Today over 3 million tonnes are mined per year, mostly for use in stainless steel, and the IEA forecasts a need for a doubling in production by 2040 to meet the clean energy transition demands. Metalplant's end products are carbon dioxide removal, green nickel known as HyperNickel ™, and then a combination of the two, a carbon-negative nickel product termed NegativeNickel™ .---Eric has been working to galvanize the world to gigatonne scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) since 2017, when he started a climate change mitigation think tank called Climitigation, with the goal of analyzing promising, yet underdeveloped CDR technologies and helping to bring them into existence. In 2018, Eric launched Project Vesta as a non-profit to deploy coastal enhanced weathering (CEW) with olivine. In 2020, Eric led the world's first sale of CEW for CDR in Stripe Climate's first purchases. In 2021, the team wanted to launch a for-profit version of the project, but before occurring, Eric left the project. ---Prior to his work in climate, Eric was known for his work as a biohacker, futurist, and in his advocacy for cognitive enhancement and life extension. Ceo And Co-FounderMetalplant 2022 - PresentMetalplant combines Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) with critical metals recovery using nickel hyperaccumulating plants. The idea at the core of the concept is to take the problem of metals like nickel in minerals used for ERW and turn it into a solution by recovering the metals through phytomining and using the revenue to subsidize the ERW process. While the long-term price target of the carbon dioxide removal industry is to get to below $100 per tonne, the long-term price target for nickel is well above the near $20,000 per tonne it is at today.This path has led us to create the world's first dedicated enhanced weathering commercial farms, along with the development of ERW-specific crops and our process also allows us to use a much higher volume of minerals with our hyperaccumulator plants because they have evolved to be tolerant to high pH and trace metals, growing natively in this region on 100% serpentine soils. This allows for a much higher density of CDR per Ha than other implementations of ERW to date (see picture of our 32-plot trial and photo of highest application rate). The serpentine soils we operate on are historically considered non-arable because they already contain high levels of these metals which we are able to recover and remediate over time. (We also have a method for chromium recovery...)Our goal is to make the world’s first economically viable CDR technique that is self-scaling via revenue from co-products. In order to do this, we are vertically integrated from our local quarries containing gigatonnes of magnesium-rich feedstock, to operating our own farms, to developing novel metallurgical extraction processes. By keeping all value at each step inside the company and operating all stages of the process, we can keep our heads down and focus on rapid upscaling in the future without any impediments.

Co-FounderProject Vesta Apr 2018 - Apr 2021San Francisco, UsEric spun Project Vesta out of his think tank Climigation in order to advance the science of coastal enhanced weathering (CEW) with real-world pilot projects. CEW proposes utilizing coastlines and the power of wave energy to efficiently accelerate the breakdown of a mineral called olivine. Each 1 tonne of olivine that weathers, removes approximately 1 tonne of CO2 from the atmosphere/ocean, while also having the potential to counteract ocean acidification. Olivine is highly abundant and inexpensive, and the process has the ability to scale up to billions of tonnes of CO2 removed per year. Taking into account minimizing grinding energy and transportation distance of the minerals, the process has the potential to be greater than 90% efficient. Until Project Vesta, there was no in situ pilot project deployed to demonstrate the safety and speed of the process. Project Vesta was started to bridge the research gap and perform experiments to prove the weathering rate, safety, and logistics and then certify its ability to remove carbon so that this process is available to be deployed on a global scale. Eric negotiated the world's first sale of carbon dioxide removal with coastal enhanced weathering. The world's first olivine coastal enhanced weathering pilot site was deployed on a beach in Southampton, New York in 2022. -
