During the Winter term, I worked for ELEC-390, which was an engineering design course tailored towards preparing students for their final year capstone. The course teaches students engineering design methodology, use various "tools" for design work, learn fundamentals of project planning and project management, and understand some of the ethics of electrical and computer engineering design. I became proficient with hands-on assembly, reworking PCBs using soldering station and microscope. I was responsible for performing tests on products to prepare them for certification tests, such as UL, EMC/ESD, and I learned methods of mitigating compliance issues. I was in charge of managing BOMs for the projects and liaising with suppliers. Throughout these experiences, I gained knowledge of design, simulation, layout, and testing for analog and digital circuitry. I was able to apply them as I collaborated with my fellow intern (mechanical) on a Bluetooth speaker project, which was done with reasonable guidance from senior engineers. I was responsible for all the electrical aspects of the project, including architecture, circuit design, schematic capture, PCB layout, parts procurement, soldering, assembly, and tests. During this process, I was able to identify failures, troubleshoot corresponding technical problems, investigate root causes, and create permanent solutions.
