Aol

New York, Ny, Us

Member of core startup team to conceive, build, launch and run AOL's Entertainment Asylum (EA) brand (which later grew to become the AOL Entertainment channel). EA was responsible for providing all entertainment content within AOL for both AOL's 10+ million users and other groups within the company such as AOL International.Initially, Eric helped conceive, build, and launch the EA site on the proprietary AOL platform. His responsibilities included working with all stakeholders to understand the needs and wants of the new entertainment area, then to synthesize those data points into an action plan for the new site. He then coded, tested and launched the new site. From there, Eric's position shifted to product manager. Responsibilities including daily content publication (including managing a team of three engineers as well as interfacing with the design, marketing and web engineering groups), identifying market opportunities for the site and helping define the site's vision and strategy within AOL and the greater online landscape.AOL in the late '90s was an extremely dynamic, fast-growing company with many initiatives. Some of the projects Eric worked on included:- Creating a standardized publishing mechanism. Working closely with the content group, Eric identified the most frequently used content elements (such as a photo gallery, feature article or video interview) and created a form and process to make the creating of new content streamlined, cutting the process down to hours instead of days and dramatically reducing miscommunications and errors.- Identifying the need for and producing a flexible voting/polling engine. Eric worked closely with the web engineering group to create a hybrid web/AOL voting engine that could be used not only to conduct polls and gather data within the AOL EA site but also publish the data back to the site. Before this, there was no polling engine on AOL and certainly nothing that could be quickly and easily be reused.
