Dr. Ostertag is an American scientist and inventor of numerous patented genetic engineering technologies. The first graduate from the Gene Therapy Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he has over 20 years of experience in cell and gene engineering, founding multiple biotechnology companies including Poseida Therapeutics, Transposagen Biopharmaceuticals, Hera BioLabs, Demeetra AgBio and Vindico NanoBioTechnology. Dr. Ostertag served for 13 years as Chief Executive Officer and President at Transposagen, where he invented or co-invented next-generation genetic engineering platform technologies that were eventually spun out to create Poseida Therapeutics (human therapeutics), Hera BioLabs (animal models, cell lines and research reagents) and Demeetra AgBio (bioprocessing and crop sciences). Dr. Ostertag then served as founding CEO of Poseida, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company creating next-generation cell and gene therapeutics, for seven years, before transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman until retiring in February 2023. He remains a consultant to Poseida and continues to serve as Chairman of the board of directors of both Hera BioLabs and Demeetra Agbio.
