With so much time devoted to my corporate career, and feeling very blessed for all that I have received in life, I decided to take some time off and give back to the world community. For about six months, I toured Central and South America working on volunteer opportunities in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru. The following is a short description of my work during this tour.Costa Rica:Worked as a field hand on an organic, sustainable farm that focused on education and community involvement for four weeks. Work included learning the fertilizer and compost procedures, practicing sustainable living with organic farming and recycling, and raising non-medicated and organic-fed farm animals. Also took Spanish classes each day in the afternoons.Guatemala:Helped in a classroom environment with teaching lessons for a computer class of children ages 5-12. Constructed nutrition center buildings in remote villages surrounding Lake Atitlan. Supported the lead carpenter with projects surrounding the opening of the new technical education center in Santa Cruz.Peru:Taught English classes at a convent in Curahuasi for girls age 13-16. Also taught English at the girls high school and an elementary school. Diagnosed and fixed all computers in the computer lab at the girls high school with issues ranging from hundreds of viruses, missing hard drives and a lack of security/user accounts to protect against malicious activity. Developed an iTV Trigger Tool application in Visual C++, which was a desktop application for embedding interactive content into a video source via a Sony BetaCam connected by serial RS-232 connection to a PC. Developed cross-browser iTV web-based content for display on WebTV, MSTV and AOLTV. iTV web development consisted of HTML, DHTML, Javascript/ECMAScript, and PHP. Also managed projects with third parties to develop iTV backend support.

Built and tested StoryServer and V/5 configurations on multiple platforms, including Windows and Solaris, with Oracle, MSSQL and Sybase, using Netscape, IIS and Apache web servers.

Worked as an intern under the Senior Systems Programmer during the summer and winter months of my college years. Highlight of internship was participating with the Beowulf Linux Parallel Processing System project. Also, wrote programs in Perl, MySQL, HTML, Javascript and TCLtk; distributed Sun workstations and trained employees to use them; assisted in upgrading all PCs from Win95 to WINNT; and converted paper documentation to online HTML documentation.
