Experienced leader in Electromechanical Product Design and Design Processes.I'm ecstatic to have the opportunity to be part of a team working on challenging products at Emerson Micro-Motion. Currently designing explosion-proof transmitters for hazardous area locations used on coriolis flow meters. Learning the ins and outs of producing mission and safety critical solutions in a highly regulated industry has been highly rewarding and educational. Not a day goes by where I haven't learned something new about the nuances of developing reliable, safe, competitive products for industries that depend on us for keeping their factories, pipelines, and most importantly - people - healthy and optimally functioning. Wonderful to be part of an organization that takes pride in designing and manufacturing Hardware!

Engineer VEmerson Dec 2023 - PresentSt. Louis, Mo, Us -
Engineer IvEmerson Jul 2017 - Dec 2023St. Louis, Mo, UsDesign and testing of explosion-proof Transmitters for hazardous areas approvals per IEC 60079-0, -1, -7, and UL 1203. I design products to comply with IP66, IP67, IP69K, NEMA 4X for environmental protection per IEC 60529. Vibration testing consists of sinusoidal, random, and shock test suites performed to IEC 60028-2-6 and MIL-STD-810F. A small company work environment ephasizes subject matter expertise, independent action utilizing NX CAD, Nastran, 3D printers, hands on testing with creative solutions to complex problems in a fast paced, stage gate driven process. DFMEA, DFM, FEA, design reviews, internal and external product evaluation are the levers that control flow through the gate process. Reliance on the design engineer to drive projects from conception to production instills efficiency in doing business with external vendors, engineers, and machinists, along with internal relations with purchasing, operations, finance, sales, marketing, quality, and engineering units. Reliance on data driven decisions creates a need for nimble, unique design of test and production tooling and acquisition thereof. The use of rapid prototyping methods of producing polymeric, aluminum, and stainless steel designs along with standard machining are staples in the day to day tool arsenal. Never a dull moment! -
Principal Mechanical EngineerOracle Jan 2010 - Jan 2017Austin, Texas, UsHands on engineer developing data accelerator and tape library controller. Critical path role as lead mechanical engineer using ProEngineer to create models, layout, and drawings of 2U NEBs compliant flash and DRAM based data accelerator. Juggled thermal design and CFD on the system at the same time assisting in PCA/PCB development and component placement, heat sink design and selection, DRAM module airflow specification, fan selection and placement. Tracked, opened, closed issues on defect tracking system. Presented design numerous times to groups for review and feedback.Became part of team working on new tape library controller. Did a lot of hands on work in the lab mapping the system air speeds, and temperatures. Got sidetracked at one point tracking down SAS errors and got deep into a signal integrity investigation. Quantified a lot of eye diagrams using a Lacroy scope to determine root causes of the errors. Learned a lot. Spent time researching disk drive susceptibility to vibration and determining margin, potential fixes. Designed a small server for use in a couple different form factors. -
Advisory/Senior Mechanical EngineerSun Microsystems Sep 2005 - Jan 2010Palo Alto, Ca, UsDesigned flash based data accelerator. Lead mechanical engineer on packaging and cooling design. Created mock ups, designed sheet metal, performed FEA on motherboard and overall system, created CFD models to evaluate system and component level cooling, and size fans. Chose orthogonal connectors to maximize number of hot pluggable storage cards, and allowed design and use of simplified, inexpensive backplane with no high speed traces routed on it, only through it.Designed and released a dense fibre channel drive controller and JBOD. Patented vibration isolation and attenuation system for disk drives attached together in a replaceable assembly, as well as for a group of these assemblies in a system. Performed thermal and airflow testing on the units to map and validate thermal requirements. Walked the product through the EMC and environmental compliance tests providing and releasing fixes in high pressure situations. -
Senior/Staff/Development/Graduate Mechanical EngineerStoragetek Jun 1989 - Sep 2005Mechanical and thermal design, provided sustaining engineering for numerous data storage products.
