As part of the field staff, I worked and lived aboard small (100-150 passenger) expedition ships that traveled to the Arctic and Antarctic. Specialized in both natural and human history. Lead interpretive hikes or used a small boat as the operator/guide to bring to clients closer to nature. Presented History lectures which focused on the areas traveled.
The Nature ConservancyThe Palmyra Program2012-2013Located 1,000 miles south of Hawaii is Palmyra Atoll. Only 680-acres but with 480,000 acres of lagoons, coral reefs, and submerged lands, Palmyra is one of the most spectacular marine wilderness areas on Earth. Palmyra is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Refuge out to 12 miles and a Marine National Monument out to 50 miles. A group of international scientists know as the Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium (PARC) study the atoll’s unique environment. The Nature Conservancy manages the atoll in partnership with the USFWS and the PARC. Field Station Manager2012 - 2013The Field Station Manager (FSM) is responsible for the overall management, supervision, and safety of Palmyra Atoll operations and staff. As the FSM, I was responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the field station facilities and equipment including generators, boats, and aircraft runway, and the oversight of all life support services. I led and managed the staff, acted as the primary liaison with visiting researchers, guests, and visiting vessels.
Greater Denver Area
Without interruption since 1956, the United Sates has been studying the Antarctic and its interactions with the rest of the planet. The U.S. Antarctic Program is consists of scientists selected from universities and other research institutions and operations and support by a contractor and other agencies of the U.S. Government. Together they carry out the Nation's goals of supporting the Antarctic Treaty, fostering cooperative research with other nations, and protecting the Antarctic environment. Approximately 3,000 people are involved either working at one of the three year-round research stations or on the two research icebreakers. The National Science Foundation funds and manages the program. The planning and execution of the over 100 granted science projects that work in the Antarctic is divided among a group of Project Managers. My specialization was on projects that worked along the Antarctic Peninsula: Palmer Station, the peninsula based year-round research station, temporary field camps, or aboard the icebreaker; The R/V Laurence M. Gould. I would analyze the project needs, develop a project support plan and manage the support execution, modifying resource requirements and schedules through the evolution of the project. I acted as the support contractor’s chairman for the Palmer Area User Committee (PAUC). The PAUC was made up of the stakeholders tasked with developing the direction of the research conducted on the peninsula. My primary responsibility was to conduct annual meetings and resolve all identified issues. I developed and published research support plans for each science project, created long-range strategic plans for each individual project as well as for all projects working together as a whole.
Palmer Station, Antarctica
The Station Manager at Palmer Station is responsible for all aspects of running an isolated research station in Antarctica. As Station Manager, I was instrumental in the planning and coordination of all science and station projects. I also ensured station facilities and operational equipment was maintained to the highest level necessary for the rigors of the Antarctic environment. Acted as the liaison between the on-site staff, various stateside support team members, vessels and other research stations. Performed emergency-response team leadership duties including the recruitment and training of personnel designated to respond to specific emergency scenarios. Promoted a positive, supportive and safe work environment while maintaining good morale among the community during both the long, isolated winter and the busy, summer months.
