Sr. Staff Software EngineerAmplitude Mar 2020 - Jan 2024San Francisco, California, UsTransitioned ClearBrain engineering team to Amplitude after acquisition: tech lead and engineering manager for Amplitude Audiences / Recommend (https://amplitude.com/blog/recommend-personalization-engine), a reimplementation of the ClearBrain system within Amplitude. With the team, built this on top of the internal Nova warehouse, Airflow, Apache Spark (EMR), and Tensorflow. Our team remained in-tact through a successful launch of the platform, bolstering the multi-product approach positioned by Amplitude in the IPO.Key contributor to a number of strategic projects over the next 3 years: - Initial implementation of the Amplitude User Profile API, in close collaboration with the Experiment team to standardize on common infrastructure and design used in their API. https://www.docs.developers.amplitude.com/analytics/apis/user-profile-api/ - Proposed and built a high performance Feature Engineering service to significantly reduce the complexity of our machine learning pipelines, while increasing reliability and ability to handle very large datasets. This system reduced our COGS over 12x and significantly reduced engineering effort to maintain the system. - Real-time cohort sync and cross-dimension cohorts (cohorts of users defined as groups, etc.) - Expedited implementation of a strategic system to calculate MTU usage at scale to unlock MTU-based billing https://help.amplitude.com/hc/en-us/articles/12217810210331-Monthly-tracked-users-MTUs-billing-guide; ran in production for over a year problem-free. - Worked side-by-side with CTO on Warehouse Native Amplitude, an additional implementation of many of Amplitude's core analytics features, to run on SQL warehouses, including stand-alone version for Snowpark Container Services, and high performance SQL Funnels and Pathfinder analyses: https://amplitude.com/blog/warehouse-native-technical-deep-dive - Initial load testing and infrastructure planning for Session Replay https://amplitude.com/session-replay -
Cofounder, CtoClearbrain Oct 2016 - Mar 2020Palo Alto, California, UsClearBrain is an early-stage startup innovating in distributed systems and machine learning, with a mission to build a self-service AI to predict any user behavior. Our goal is to help companies automatically predict their most important user outcomes. We’re building a self-service platform to automatically connect disparate datasets across millions of users, extract machine learning features across billions of events, and produce predictive insights to optimize a company’s downstream marketing operations. We’re led by a team from Google and Optimizely, and well funded by investors in Dropbox, Optimizely, and AppDynamics. We’re in the earliest stages, but already have mid-market & public customers, pushing the limits of distributed systems and machine learning. We dabble in Spark, Scala, Go, and Node every day, and think a lot about optimal matrix design, statistical feature extraction, and making machine learning as self-service and scalable as possible. -

Senior Software EngineerGoogle, Inc Apr 2004 - Oct 2013Mountain View, Ca, UsBuilt key features for Google's API serving infrastructure as it grew from a few APIs and a few thousand queries per second up two orders of magnitude to hundreds of APIs and hundreds of thousands of queries each second. With a small team (initially just 2 of us) built Cloud Endpoints for Google App Engine which significantly multiplied the number of APIs served by the infrastructure. I implemented the python library and integration with the App Engine backend. Scaled up and hardened ads serving platform through 10x traffic increase and repeated significant cluster management software, server hardware, and networking hardware platform changes. Launch contributions to over 30 features / products including a complete rewrite of AdSense. C++ server performance tuning, python tool development. Organized a weekly cross-site SWE in SRE gathering for over a year to promote ambitious software development projects within the organization.Launched several public-facing projects in 20% time including Google for Nonprofits, the SRE Treasure Hunt and an OpenSocial API spec correctness/completeness test framework.Recipient of EMG award, OC award, Founders award, GFP award, two Certificates of Excellence and nineteen Peer Bonuses for broad contributions to Google's long-term success. Software Development EngineerNetscape Communications Jan 1998 - Aug 2001Member of core layout team on Netscape / Mozilla browser project now known as Firefox. On that project, I owned form submission, frameset rendering, and the code that allowed form elements to be manipulated from javascript. During my time there I resolved hundreds of standards compliance and compatibility issues.Interesting projects included: Hardened session navigation (back/forward) in the browser, improving accuracy and speed of form state restoration while reducing memory usage by 80%. Improved frameset and iframe security by fixing holes in the same origin policy. Worked actively with external sites to ensure compatibility with Netscape browser. Worked with an AOL internal team developing an embedded browser. Selected as Netscape representative for W3C Xforms working group. Worked as part of a team to do an experimental CSS/DOM rewrite in Netscape 4.x.I started there working for 8 months as an intern, developing the default plugin that renders when a plugin is requested but not yet installed. During that time I rewrote Bugzilla, our then-internal bug tracking system to be a generalized task tracker.
