I work as an engineer for MPR Associates, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia. MPR is a mid-sized engineering consulting firm that specializes in providing technical solutions to our clients in three main market segments: power, health and life sciences, and federal. Working at MPR has given me experience working on a variety of highly technical projects, including neutronics analyses for nuclear reactors, structural and thermodynamic analyses using ANSYS and hand calculations, and root cause analyses for failures of components at nuclear plants, among others. Most of these technical projects require accelerated timelines to complete. The short-term nature of these projects, along with typically working on at least three projects simultaneously, means that I have contributed to over 50 projects in my 3 years at MPR. Working on this many projects has allowed me to learn and improve my problem-solving approach through many repetitions.My experience at MPR has also included development of non-technical skills. Recently, I have earned more responsibility managing projects. This role includes drafting proposals; projecting cost, schedule, and risk; and managing a small team (typically 2-4 members) throughout the project to ensure that the final deliverable provides value and is on schedule and under budget. My role as a project manager has allowed me to draw on my experience on the business side (I majored in Finance as well as Mechanical Engineering) and has provided valuable experience communicating with clients and internal team members.Most projects at MPR require a final deliverable of a calculation or report. I have written tens of these documents, and the feedback I have obtained through each preparation and review process has strengthened my technical writing capabilities. My work requires regular communication with team members and clients, especially when I am working on multiple projects at once. I regularly present findings and status updates to clients, prepare internal kickoff meetings and intermittent touchpoints for project teams, and have prepared numerous formal presentations to clients and stakeholders (including presenting at last year's American Nuclear Society Conference in Washington, DC).I played Division 1 baseball in college, and still regularly use many of the lessons learned and habits developed during that time in my professional career. Outside of work, I am an avid golfer and enjoy studying golf course architecture.
