I am a motivated chemical engineer and recent Oregon State University Honors College graduate. With four years of academic lab research experience, I recently completed my undergraduate thesis on compressed-air energy storage efficiency and am excited to acquire industry experience. While working at the OSU Ice Core and Quaternary Geochemistry Lab, I developed a vacuum flask cooling system for gas separation using PID controllers and liquid nitrogen. The system can now maintain a flask temperature at -90℃ with enough consistency to help perform mass spectroscopy and gas chromatography measurements. I have also regularly helped with the maintenance of lab equipment and operating instruments for precise atmospheric measurements from glacial ice.During the 2019 Pete and Rosalie Johnson Internship Program, I investigated the synthesis of metal-organic framework films using microfluidic channels. I worked on the development of a prototype device and led inter-company communications to facilitate product development for the project. In addition, I taught myself to program syringe pumps with no prior experience. I have presented this work to upcoming first year students at OSU, as well as at the 2019 Annual American Vacuum Society Pacific Northwest Symposium. At the start of the pandemic, I decided to spend a summer working as a sales associate at The Home Depot. I was responsible for assisting customers by providing product knowledge, reviewing stock to ensure product availability, and maintaining machinery for the mixing of paint. Learning was a constant process, as there were thousands of different items to be familiar with in order to help customers. Communication skills were crucial to help customers find what they needed in a timely manner. The experience I gained working in customer-service has proven to be invaluable throughout my education to become an engineer, particularly when working in teams to complete projects. Looking ahead, I would like to acquire hands-on experience and refine professional skills I will be able to use for the rest of my life. As a student, I demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to learning, often balancing both classes and extracurricular research. I value working in teams and gain much satisfaction from seeing the final product of hard labor. Beyond my experience in two lab environments outside of classes, I am excited for the opportunity to learn more in the field of chemical engineering.
