Desktop Support Technician | Deskside Engineer

As a Single IT Resource working in multiple Regions of Colorado & occasionally Kansas City, I provide full spectrum on site IT Support- Network, Server, Phone, Desktop Hardware, Software, Moves- of great Banking Industry folks.Relentlessly getting it done, with an average of 1500 driving miles a quarter, and over $8K in OT last year, I use my skills as an endurance athlete to ensure these great people enjoy their jobs. Because whatever they may do, their job requires they work with networked computers and other devices to take care of our customers. So I tirelessly implement all the best practices I've learned in 25 years of the highest level of professional Technical Support.Just like my ongoing health, nutrition, and exercise studies underpin my "Lifetime Achievement Endurance Events", I continuously learn whatever I need, to underpin the ever-more-technologically-complicated world of modern life, while at the same time seeing it as a job requirement that I never appear "Too busy to help You".--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I was the current "Employee of the Quarter", with 10 years of service and my face rotating on all the Branch's screens, when they let me go, just after letting the Head of Operations, Regional Senior Retail Officer, the Head of Training, Head of Teller Operations, Head of Fraud, the Region President, and all of Cash Management (twice over) go as well.

Ecm-Bpm-Document Imaging Support

At the time, 1 of 8 people world-wide providing Phone/eMail support of a "Best Product" Award-Winning monster of a software package, in what was openly referred to by my ex-coworkers as "The Toughest Tech Job in Kansas City."Great People, Great Product- this software represents of one of the 5 or 6 times in my whole life I've been impressed by something a computer could do.Left with my Wife, the newly graduated Librarian, for Colorado, figuring I would find work, and eager to pursue the active Lifestyle, which has included Ironman, Pikes Peak Ascent/Marathon 15 years, Multiple Mtn Ultra, 50K-50Mile Runs, 100mile Bike Rides etc.It was in the PC HelpDesk Budget at my former position with CFDS/ANB Bank to go to KC in support of our Branches there at least once a year, so I've had some long lunches with former co-workers at Perceptive Software. Many of whom have moved into Senior positions Supporting ImageNow, such as "Supervisor of Global Support Services" or into Training. So I've really enjoyed discussing their fascinating "Virtual" world of Software Support, and discussing their pursuits.Once back in Desktop, working directly with folks in support of their use of Computers, I don't regret leaving this great company, quite as much as I did at first, but it remains a fond memory of an engrossing, and deeply rewarding Tech experience.

2004 - 2005 ~1 yr

Desktop Support

Desktop Support of PCs and Macs for a great company which moved from 40 to 20 while I was there, on the list of 100 best companies to work for in America.Appreciated the opportunities, and enjoyed the good folks working there. My building housed the 'Unix Jockeys', 'Server Weasels' and others who created the infrastructure to manage $100Billion in assets, as well as the Training Dept. So I learned everything I could and really upped my game on the Windows/Server side of the street. I was also the sole Desktop Representative on the Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity Team, where I once commented that if you really wanted to simulate a Disaster in KC, just limit people's access to BBQ!We had a good many Macs, and a fellow former Senior Tech at APS working there too, so I never lost my edge on the Macintosh side of the street.Very good, very professional Techs worked here, and I would recommend almost any and all of them.

Feb 2001 - Oct 2004

Sole Technical Support

Macworks

As the Tech Support of the Midwest's Largest Macintosh Dealer I answered Phone and Email inquiries, spanning the gamut, pursuant to the use of all Macintosh Computers and their related Peripherals. We bought large lot liquidations and closeouts, including big purchases like all of Daystar Digital's huge 12-RAM Slot, 6 PCI Card, 7 Drive machines, and custom Over-Clocked G3 CPU Cards. So for about 9 months we sold the Fastest Personal Computer on the Planet. As with APS, we had a lot of Music Industry and other 'High-Power Needs' clients, as well as local basic end users. It was a great mix. After the high stress of being Senior Tech at APS, often fixing others mistakes, to know folks had been handled correctly any time they'd called in (because they had talked to ME, ha) was like living on an Enchanted Island. I was still using all the people skills and knowledge that had helped win APS a MacWorld World-Class Tech Support Award while I was Senior Tech there, and in fact was asked to come back to APS by their Tech Supervisor, but MacWorks also had a tremendous sales staff (most ex-APS folks too), who almost never sold the wrong product into a machine. This made my job so much more about customer education on using, and enjoying our products, than correction of sales mistakes. So it was a joy to work there, and I was very content. Even turning down large raises to work elsewhere. Then we merged with a company in California, and I had very little feedback into the sales loop there, resulting in a lot of upset customers.I tried to discuss these missteps with Reps in Cali, and literally got responses like "We're not at War, man...".What?So within weeks I left for a $15K raise at American Century, which had courted me the whole time I was with MacWorks.

Senior Tech

Aps Technologies

High Volume, and at its peak $100Million Call Center for an 80-Page Catalog of the sexiest PC peripherals- Hard Drives, Tape Backup, every flavor of now-gone Optical, eventually including even Macintosh clones.High Stress, Work-Hard/Play-Hard close-knit group of maniacs, many of whom I was mentor to, and who remain some of my best friends to this day.I started as a Tech, but had been training for years while in College to do this job, and became Senior Tech in less than a year.We invented Digital Active Termination for SCSI Drives, won a MacWorld World-Class Award for Tech Support, and were 2nd in the national Malcolm Baldrige Customer Service Award all while I was Senior Tech. With the best products and best support we gained a loyal customer base to include a slew of High-Tech companies, and Music industry Engineers, as well as anyone wanting the best peripherals. As Senior Tech, High-Profile and Professional Tech Customers, such as Engineers for Nine Inch Nails or Metallica, and Lockheed-Martin's Techs called me for support directly.I also took escalated calls for Technical or Customer Relations difficulty. It was tough, very rewarding work. Then a supplier gave us what were the largest Hard Drives being sold at the time, but with a latent bearing problem that would show up 2-3 years into the 5 year warranty. That company went bankrupt owing APS somewhere in the range of $20million, and APS merged with La Cie. I had once called La Cie about a drive, and was shocked to be told "We have no mechanism for that" over and over by their Senior Tech, when I asked about basic services that APS provided. So it was a blessing I left for MacWorks just before the demise, right after I finished doing all the compatibility testing of our Peripherals and Software with our Macintosh Clone. One of the few now disbanded Tech companies that has, and could at any minute hold a reunion, and lots of folks did, and would again show up.

Assistant To The Manager Of Training

Originally as a student, and then as an employee of the University, I taught Faculty Staff and Students to use the Campus-Wide Information System, and the Internet, when the Internet was really just becoming available to the public. In fact I fielded a call from Southwestern Bell at one point asking about '...this internet thing...' because they were getting a lot of requests for 2nd Phone lines.I had just downloaded jpegs of the Paintings from the 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' outside Chauvet France that contains the oldest human-painted images yet discovered. Some of them were crafted as much as 32,000 years ago... and 3 days later I had the jpegs on my PowerMac. So I told them, yeah, this internet thing is going to work out. And I decided that if I could, I would try to help folks make the most of computers and their Networks.I could have learned to manage the Web Servers as early as the 91-92 school year, and believe my life would have been very different if I had. But I wanted to help people, USE machines, not work solely WITH machines, and as they say 'It has made all the difference'. I have stuck to that goal despite the proficiency I've subsequently gained over a wide swath of Personal and Enterprise Technologies. At one point, although I lacked a formal Degree, I was teaching Educational Technology in the Education Dept, and managing all the Computer Labs for the Academic Computing Center. This was a great introduction to Professional Computer Work, as Professors and College Students can both be very demanding and inquisitive groups. From beginning to end, I've seen Computers and the Internet as about the combination of 'Data Storage' and 'Communication' whether that's been Databases, Bulletin Boards, and Telnet, or Web Browsing, Twitter and Cloud Storage, and all of it, like my work, has been in Service to greater ends than just the technologies themselves.
