Profile bio

About Eric Rumble

I enjoy building things. That's what originally attracted me to software engineering. After progressing through the regular channels and landing my first job as a software engineer, I found out there's so much more to it than just writing the software. I became fascinated with not only writing code, but learning how to deploy, monitor, and secure it. That fascination grew beyond just the boundaries of the software itself, but into the underlying infrastructure, and how to build and maintain that. Thus, I transitioned into the world of SREs and Platform Engineers. I do still enjoy writing software, but I do so now with a broader perspective and a passion for building platforms and enabling other engineers to get their code from their laptop to the cloud.

Role listed

Roswell, Ga, Us

Staff Platform Engineer

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Us

Abridge was an interesting change of scenery for me. Instead of AWS, this was the first company I've worked for that used GCP, as well as the first company that ran workloads on GPUs.As is custom for a platform team, my team was responsible for maintaining the infrastructure that the services ran on. This included the GKE clusters, the VPCs, Cloud SQL instances, etc... We were also responsible for anything related to IaC. While at Abridge, I designed and implemented the CD pipeline for Terraform using Terragrunt and Atlantis. I continued down the path of codifying everything by codified existing ArgoCD applications that were manually deployed, then implemented Flux as an alternative to ArgoCD, including bootstrapping Flux via Terraform. I also created a system to automatically back up GCP Healthcare Datasets using Cloud Functions and Cloud Scheduler using JavaScript and the GCP APIs.

Aug 2023 - Aug 2024

Devops Team Lead

Atlanta, Ga, Us

This role was very similar to my role at Terminus. I was able to use a lot of the knowledge I gained at Terminus to quickly implement a few solutions. Such as using Github Actions for planning and applying Terraform configurations, and using a service mesh and an ingress gateway in the Kubernetes clusters. I was also able to solve a few other issues in better ways, such as not using Terraform's Helm provider to deploy to Kubernetes, but instead using a GitOps tool called Flux.In addition to the infrastructure work, I was also a member of the Architecture Review Board, where I helped architect and develop a call routing solution using AWS EventBridge and Step Functions.

Jun 2021 - Mar 2023

Site Reliability Engineer, Tech Lead

Atlanta, Georgia, Us

As an SRE at Terminus, I was responsible for not only guiding teams on defining SLIs and SLOs, but alsomaintaining infrastructure, and creating CI/CD pipelines. As a Tech Lead, I was responsible for defining bestpractices and patterns for applications running on our infrastructure. My team worked closely with other engineering teams to create Terraform modules that would not only instantiate the requisite cloud resources, but also create DataDog dashboards for monitoring and alerting on those resources should they risk running out of error budget. We also created supporting services, such as a saga coordinator, for other teams to use to better coordinate workloads between disparate services. We were also responsible for maintaining the infrastructure on which everything ran, including the EKS clusters, IAM accounts, SSO integrations, etc...

Apr 2018 - Apr 2021

Sr. Software Engineer

Digital Envoy

I worked with several teams at Digital Envoy to modernize their CI/CD pipelines, and transition from an on-premise data center to AWS. I was involved in re-architecting solutions that relied on fragile polling mechanisms, and converting them to more a robust pub/sub architecture. This helped improve overall latency of systems as the number of synchronous API calls was drastically reduced. In addition to this, I introduced Terraform and Ansible as means of provisioning EC2 instances in their AWS accounts. Creating a means of easily reproducing VMs was a major paradigm shift as their previous on-premise machines were non reproducible, and great care had to be taken to ensure their survival.

Jun 2017 - Apr 2018

Devops Engineer

Newcastle Upon Tyne, Gb

I returned to the same DevOps team that I worked with previously. My team has become part of a global organization focused on moving Sage towards a DevOps culture by providing automation for as many parts of the SDLC as possible. This includes implementing a continuous delivery and continuous integration pipeline, as well as using Ansible to automate the provisioning of servers hosted in AWS. My role within the team consists of using CloudFormation templates in conjunction with Ansible playbooks to instantiate infrastructure for new products, both internal and external, as well as provide support to developers with regards to troubleshooting applications, recommending AWS services for use with applications, and maintaining existing application infrastructure as the applications scale. I also respond to incidents in the production environments to ensure the highest level of uptime for each application.

Mar 2016 - Jun 2017

Automation Engineer

Holmdel, New Jersey, Us

While at Vonage, I worked with a small team to create tools and processes to automate tasks and promote best practice as defined by the company. Using Puppet, we ensured all of our servers were running in a very predictable fashion that was easy to troubleshoot should issues arise. Using Vagrant VMs as a proof of concept model, I helped my team transition from a masterless distributed Puppet workflow to a masterful Puppet workflow that eased maintenance cost of both the puppet infrastructure and individual servers. I also wrote tests for the in house Puppet modules using serverspec and beaker.

Oct 2015 - Mar 2016

Devops Engineer

Newcastle Upon Tyne, Gb

I work on a team that not only hosts the products offered by Sage Software, but creates the infrastructure and tooling with to ensure the quality of our products and maintain a 99.9% uptime. Using Ansible and CloudFormation as our configuration management tool, we are able to deploy both infrastructure and servers in AWS in a similar fashion. I transitioned from Software Engineer to DevOps Engineer due to my work on creating the development and testing environment for my development team, and by working closely with the DevOps team to ensure that all our needs for hosting our product were met. Since joining the DevOps team, I have successfully launched five new products, personally created the infrastructure for three of those products using AWS CloudFormation, and participated in change reviews to ensure the highest level of quality for hosting, as well as meet our SLAs.

Sep 2014 - Oct 2015

Associate Software Engineer

Newcastle Upon Tyne, Gb

As an associate software engineer, I assisted in developing a new SaaS offering from Sage Software. I worked in an agile environment to deliver high quality code in a timely manner. In addition to my responsibilities as a software engineer I also created and maintained a development and test environment, using Vagrant and VirtualBox, for my team to use locally.

Oct 2013 - Sep 2014

Morrow, Ga, Us

As a tutor I helped students attain their academic goals in their computer science classes by reinforcing the lessons they learned during class periods. I often gave lectures regarding pointer management and recursion in C and C++, as well as lectures on normal forms for databases. I also held a weekly workshop for creating simple circuits using logic gates.

Jan 2013 - May 2013

Intern

Morrow, Ga, Us

I worked as an intern for Dr. Byron Jeff to design and implement a Forth interpreter for the Microchip brand PIC 16F series micro-controllers. I also worked as a computer lab assistant for the Computer Organization and Architecture class.

May 2012 - Jul 2012

Courier

Duluth, Ga, Us

As a courier I was responsible for pulling parts to fulfill orders and deliver those parts to customers in a timely manner. I established rapport with customers by creating scheduled deliveries. I maintained working knowledge of customer inventory to ensure that the parts delivered were correct, and I ensured customer satisfaction by providing delivery status updates.

Mar 2006 - Nov 2008

Team Lead

Thomasville, North Carolina, Us

As a team lead I trained new employees on proper loading and unloading procedures and safety protocol. I was responsible for distributing the workload to the dock workers. I helped maximize work efficiency by coordinating the placement of trailers across the work dock.

Aug 2004 - Mar 2006

Machinist

Epm Inc
