The team collaborated with a local Blacksburg farm for the goal of integrating a towable trailer with a furling system to quickly collapse, move, and re-erect the wind turbine depending on changing wind patterns.Responsibilities:- Tested composite fiber orientations and weaves to optimize flexural strength.- Researched viable fabrics for use in a multi-material laminate composite blade.- Manufactured blades and nosecone using a vacuum bag molding process.

Operated as a metallurgical engineering intern in the lab of a ductile iron foundry with a focus in melt processes.Central Project: Desulfurization - Investigated potential causes for high sulfur fluctuations that were intermittently present in previous months. Through melt chemistry analysis of historical data at several phases in the melting process, correlations were found between the initial cupola sulfur levels and the efficiency of sulfur drop-out during desulfurization based on variations in iron temperatures. A study was also conducted on lime reactivity based on particle size and feed rates, and as a result, changes to procedures were implemented to improve accuracy of lime reactivity tests used in production.Defect Analysis - Identified failure modes of fractured test specimens for nonconforming chemistries, tensile properties, and defects. Metallurgy Training - Developed a presentation for the melt department which introduced concepts of the metallurgy behind ductile cast iron to educate on proper process control.

Metallurgist Responsibilities:- Heat Treatment Testing - Conducted design-of-experiment trials to increase UTS in a Cr-Ni-Fe superalloy through changes in heat treatment parameters. - Microstructure Specifications - Standardized customer specifications and developed photographic references of microstructure defects for passing and nonconforming morphologies of various alloys.Product Engineer Responsibilities:- Forge Process Design - Modeled and designed the forged shape of a Ti-17 HPC Blisk for the GE9X engine. Models were created using NX and simulated using DEFORM 2D to tailor temperature and strain distribution during the closed die forging process. A final production review was held with GE to propose the design, which was approved and used in the production process later that year.Process Engineer Responsibilities:- Handling Damage Reduction - Designed measures to reduce handling damage of machined parts with a slotted divider system that reduces metal-on-metal contact. Procedures were written for quality inspections and for proper handling during the packaging and transport processes using the new containers and a 20% decrease in handling damage was seen after implementing over a 3 month period.
