15+ years with the same employer? True, but my role has continually evolved, thanks to the organization’s support for further education, training, and frequent opportunities to learn something new and apply that knowledge. It’s a small organization (~30 people) with a history of getting things done with internal resources, forcing me to learn and put in to practice everything from SQL to user-centered design to data visualization, to public outreach, software and hardware usability and functionality design and testing, to handling research metadata and designing research data collection standards, to data mining and analysis, to creating style guides for branding online and print publications, to running hundreds of fish auctions with proceeds offsetting the cost of the research. It’s been anything but static.Not only has the work been interesting and dynamic, the IPHC is one of the most highly respected and successful regional fisheries management organizations in the world, with arguably to biggest, best, and longest running fisheries datasets ever. At the small literary publisher, my responsibilities ranged from generating and distributing press releases, to working with printers and warehouses, to editing and producing the press-ready copy and images.
