Dr. Eric Tao is a full professor of Computer Science at California State University Monterey Bay. He is also the founding director of the Institute for Innovation and Economic Development at CSUMB. The Institute is sponsored by the Economic Development Administration of the US Government, serving the Greater Monterey Bay region by providing a venue for innovative ideas, venture funding, and the commercial transfer of research.Dr. Eric Tao served as the president of the University of East and West Medicine in Sunnyvale, California between 2018 and 2022. At UEWM, he led the team to renew accreditation, grow online programs and enrollment, re-establish university vision, and strengthen standard operations. The accreditation review team remarked, "Dr. Tao's leadership is the most important factor in the 7-year accreditation renewal." Dr. Tao also chairs the board of Silicon Valley Research Institute, a non-profit research and education organization.Dr. Tao founded and directed the School of Computing and Design at California State University Monterey Bay between 2002 and 2015. The innovative school offers several academic programs and R&D facilities involving more than 50 faculty/staff members and over 1,000 students in undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science, Information Technology, Media Design, Learning Science, and Instructional Design. Dr. Tao, as a full professor, teaches and conducts research in innovation, financial technology, e-learning, and globalization. He has published more than thirty academic papers. He often speaks at international conferences on global technology, innovation, and education issues. Dr. Tao is passionate about community and social issues. He served on the boards of WASC-western association of schools and colleges, CSUMB Foundation, Zeuss Group Inc., and California Institute for Global Education. He founded Monterey Bay Chinese Chamber of Commerse, cofounded the Coalition for Asian Justice. He was also a Digital Technology advisor for the National Health Research Institute of Taiwan.Dr. Tao enjoys tennis, movies, cycling, classical music, seafood, red wines, and giving talks around the world.
