Save The Children is a global non-profit committed to eradicating poverty for all children around the world. I am blessed to contribute to such a power mission! My role as Lead Associate (formally known as a Literacy Program Specialist) allows me the opportunity to provide technical and training assistance to 11 schools across 6 districts in the North Mississippi Delta. These schools provide instruction to more than 15,000 students. In this position, my primary responsibilities include training program coordinators on the delivery and instruction of one of 5 literary programs that focus on the areas of phonics and phonemic awareness. I am also responsible for building, tracking, and amending 11 budget budgets totaling more than $1,000,000. I oversee a staff of coordinators, tutors, and sponsorship liaisons. I meet quarterly with superintendents and principals to ensure quality program implementation. A major responsibility of this position includes data-driven decision-making. That is, putting a narrative to the numbers - and formulating an action plan to address the deficiency. Finally, I provide reports and perform grant-reporting activities on multiple multi-million dollar grants including but not limited to TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and 21st Century, a federal education grant. I also provide strategic support to start-up sites which includes hiring, onboarding, and training.

As the Dean of Culture of Kid's Community College, I was responsible for the development of student culture and teacher culture, new teacher development, and overall school culture serving approximately 400 students and nearly 40 teachers and 2 campuses. I was at the center of establishing school-wide norms that focused on celebrating differences, curating a culture of encouragement, risk-tasking, and building "umojaa" (Unity). Using an African-centered approach to behavioral management and engagement, most of my time and efforts went to developing strategies that supported student enrichment. I was widely considered the most influential person in the school by fellow administrators, teachers, students and staff. Fostering an environment of inclusiveness meant having the ability to navigate difficult dialogue exchange. As Dean, I supported new and first-year teachers by providing strategic professional development on race, identity and doing "the work" to engage young people. I vetted curriculums and textbooks to ensure the cultural integrity of our Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native, and multi-race students.

The international Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme is described as a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. As a Professor of Individuals & Societies, I was responsible for implementing and evaluating lessons that were culturally-inclusive and age-appropriate. My daily lessons were specifically tailored to address the social, emotional, and cultural needs of young people. Some of my most popular IB lessons:- "Should LGBTQ History Be Taught in Schools?- "Was Slavery a Choice?"- "Does Change Create Power or Does Power Create Change?"- "They Came Before Columbus: The Presence of African People in The Americas"- "Racism, Bias, Prejudice or Ignorance?" As an African-Centered educator, I built my instruction around the lived experience of my students. I ensured that my lessons were rooted in the conceptual understanding of race, identity, and identity formation. I was a non-traditionalist when it came to discipline-relying heavily on restorative justice practices and peer mediation. Whether it was holding the attention of 220 students for a school-wide assembly, or providing differentiated instruction to small groups, versatility in communication style and delivery was integral to my success as a teacher. This translated into an 81% passage on the Florida state Civics exam. Additionally, I:- earned the highest pass rate in the school's history (81%)- earned the lowest fail in the school's history (19%)- nearly doubled the passage rate from 41% to 81%, an increase of more than 93%- earned the lowest number of Level 1 students on a state exam in the school's history (9%)- earned the lowest number of Level 2 students on a state exam in the school's history (10%)- earned the highest number of Level 5 students on a state exam in the school's history (12%)- earned these numbers with a student population that was 78% Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native, and multi-race.

In a time when the image of Black men, women, and youth have been both distorted and misrepresented, It is vital that people of color be affirmed in who they are. As founder and Chief Culture Curator, our team compiled an impressive resume:- Planned, coordinated, and oversaw 15 national community service projects in a single day in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr- Secured $38,000 in funding for the inaugural “Falling Black in Love” Conference - Assisted in authorship of nationally recognized anti-hazing policies and procedures that currently governs 10,000 students and 150 organizations at the largest historically Black college in the nation. - Aided a community non-profit in securing $20,000 in funding for a national conference centered on African – American women- Launched and led creative direction for Falling Black in Love Magazine, a millennial resource guide with a digital reach of over 700,000- Established and launched MEBDKX.com, a historical lifestyle blog that centered the teachings and philosophies of Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. When I moved to Chicago in the fall of 2015, I had no idea that the new journey would lead me to moving into a homeless shelter. That deeply transformative experience led me to the position of Youth Empowerment Specialist at La Casa Norte, an organization committed to serving young people and their families experiencing temporary homelessness.
