In my twenty plus years in the civil construction industry I have gleaned valuable insights into successful and unsuccessful business processes and personnel management strategies. My “boots on the ground” entry level laborer position over twenty years ago afforded me what I now see as the most valuable lessons of my career. The successful men and women whom I was surrounded by early on taught me the difficult lessons of hard work, conviction and integrity that are the foundations of my success. Through application of those lessons and many others I have learned along the way I was able to transition from construction laborer to a foreman and then onto sales, estimating and project management. During my time in sales and project management a unique opportunity arose to employ my organizational skills along with my civil construction and business operations knowledge in the design, oversight, development, and implementation of a proprietary and comprehensive business operations software solution. The implementation contributed to operational efficiencies and a rise in sales of over forty percent. Another opportunity later presented itself in which I was able to assist a contractor in transitioning from paper to digital timekeeping as well as tracking production rates and implementing sophisticated cost estimating software. This shift increased project win rates and office productivity while gaining valuable data and business insights assisting in maintaining sales in a down market and ultimately paving the way for steady sustainable growth. I have since pivoted to apply my skills to assist with personnel-centric growth strategies through coaching and mentoring team members both individually and as a whole. My experiences working in the civil construction industry have taught me to work hard, treat every opportunity with respect and appreciation, operate with integrity, remain humble, appreciate and learn from humility, be kind, remain objective and strive for team success. When the team wins, we all win.
